When completing a writing assignment in class, she would play soft music (instrumental, ocean waves, etc.) and I remember it bringing me joy to when it was time to do writing in class. I looked forward to the peacefulness as I was able to write. Whenever I would be presented with a challenging piece to play, she would break it out for me, section by section each week till I was able to feel confident enough to play it all through. I never liked school growing up and hated reading. We had mandatory reading every day and had to log it. This teacher was so funny and interesting and looking back now, I know he was looking out for me. He would sit with me during reading time and let me pick whatever books I wanted. I have even more memories of him during 9/11 which happened when I was in his classroom. I felt so safe and will always remember how supportive and kind he was compared to every other teacher. His compassion was always evident. Had our first midterm, and took my grade and cried all the way home to my mom. Keep in mind, there were only 28 students in our class, (we all came from other schools, where we were supposedly the best from our old school), and my grade placed me on the 26th of my class when my averaged points from all 6 subjects were 94% out of 100%. The young mind of mine didn't care about how 94% is already good, the only thing I saw was I am second to the last when it comes to placement in my new class. My mom went and talked to the school principal about how showing all the placements is very much unnecessary and how I was devastated even though my grades were good! My father, who I actually have not had a positive relationship with told me to cough as hard as I could and make the mucus come out and that it would get the mucus out and I would feel better. As soon as I coughed out a big thing of mucus, it made sense to me. It was such an odd realization, but that day is the day that I made the connection and my father is the one who taught it to me. At the time no female leagues or teams existed and it was viewed as a sport for only males. Coach Star gave me the opportunity to practice with and try out for the team, which I eventually made. That has stayed with me to this day. I remember thinking I want to be Dr. Shwimmer (my principal).
