Cooperation is key. If they do not cooperate, they would not be able to catch the pirates quickly. Six countries have come together to stop piracy. After the countries have cooperated with each other, the amount of piracy has fallen. Teamwork is super important. For example if one guy was chasing pirates, they can’t cross oceans. And the pirates can escape without getting caught. So if they work together they can cross oceans without permission.

Research
Stretching from the western most corner of Malaysia to the tip of Indonesia’s Bintan Island, the Malacca and Singapore straits serve as global shipping superhighways. Each year, more than 120,000 ships traverse these waterways, accounting for a third of the world’s marine commerce. Between 70% and 80% of all the oil imported by China and Japan transits the straits.

Southeast Asia was the location of 41% of the world’s pirate attacks between 1995 and 2013. The West Indian Ocean, which includes Somalia, accounted for just 28%, and the West African coast only 18%. During those years, 136 seafarers were killed in Southeast Asian waters as a result of piracy

According to a 2010 study by the One Earth Future Foundation, piracy drains between $7 billion and $12 billion dollars from the international economy each year. The Asian share of that represents buccaneering on a lavish scale, and it is becoming more ambitious. In recent months, well-armed and organized criminal groups have focused their efforts on the oil tankers that exit the narrow Malacca and Singapore straits and venture into the South China Sea.

While the majority of attacks are opportunistic — 80% of total incidents worldwide occur against anchored ships, with thieves looting equipment, crew members’ belongings and any cash found aboard — the attacks this spring have featured large-scale, sophisticated strikes on vessels at sea. These require military coordination and meticulous planning.

This trend only started in the last three months, and ASEAN expects there will be more.
Source: goo.gl/Fa1Ehx
Text
Pirates use modern technology and are armed with radar, fast motorboats and machine guns.
Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, South Korea and Sri Lanka got together with the Southeast Asian nations ( Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Lao, Brunei ) in 2004 pledging to fight piracy.
Piracy - the practice of attacking and robbing ships at sea
- the unauthorized use or reproduction of another's work
synonyms - robbery at sea, theft
Paramount - more important than anything else
- having supreme power
synonyms - supreme
Source : goo.gl/JcyhEh

                goo.gl/KNXsr3

What I have learnt:
1. I have learnt that pirates nowadays are more ruthless than the past.
2. I have learnt that pirates nowadays are using more hi-tech* things. Examples: They use radar, to locate surrounding boats, instead of going blindly into nowhere to find treasures or to steal fishermen's or any people on boats in the seas' goods, motorboats/speedboats instead of big wooden boats with sails and machine guns instead of lousy cannons.
3. I have learnt that ASEAN stands for "Association of South East Asia Nations".
4. I have learnt that SEA** is one of the many places which has the most number of pirate attacks.
5. I have learnt that SEA has pirate-infested waters.
6. I have learnt that ASEAN is trying to lower down the number of pirate attacks in the pirate-infested waters.
7. I have learnt that ASEAN is meeting up together to discuss ways to solve problems. Currently, there are only 10 countries in ASEAN which is:
1) Brunei
2) Cambodia
3) Indonesia
4) Laos
5) Malaysia
6) Myanmar
7) Philippines
8) Singapore
9) Thailand
10) Vietnam
8. I have learnt that cooperation is important to try to lower down the number of pirate attacks in SEA. Without cooperation, everything will go chaos and there will be more pirate attacks.
Starred words:
*hi-tech = Higher Technology
**SEA = South East Asia

My reasearch:

Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence by ship or boat-borne attackers upon another ship or a coastal area, typically with the goal of stealing cargo and other valuable items or properties. Those who engage in acts of piracy are called pirates. The earliest documented instances of piracy were in the 14th century BC, when the Sea Peoples, a group of ocean raiders, attacked the ships of the Aegean and Mediterranean civilizations. Narrow channels which funnel shipping into predictable routes have long created opportunities for
Ocean raiders, attacked the ships of the Aegean and Mediterranean civilizations.
What I have learnt from the text: Pirates use modern technology to attack people. Asean means Association of southeast asian nations. There was a drop in piracy 2006. All southeast asian countries signed an agreement in 2004 pledging to fight piracy.
The end..........
Resources: Wikipedia
