Although the time periods of both Alice in Wonderland and Coraline are different both films portray a similar theme. Coraline is very unhappy with her parents and their boring lifestyle, seeking to find something new. She finds a secret door in a room in her new house, thus leading her to live the life she has always wanted and dreamed of. This new life includes great food, a large garden, and parents who will do anything for her to fit her needs. Her new life comes with consequences, eventually realizing her life was better with her parents. Similar to Coraline, Alice learns to grow up and sees the world for what it actually is. Both films show how living in a separate world is different from their own life and how a journey can change your perspective of the life you are currently living. In both of these films change is one of the main themes and in Caroline's case, she changes from the child who used to complain about her family and her life to eventually appreciating the things that she has and accepting her family for who they are. In Alice in Wonderland her change is more visual as when she eats the mushroom she either grows big or grows small which also goes back to growing up. Change comes from a perspective and for both Alice and Coraline they changed from what they went through and experienced and came out the other end a different person.

In Caroline, much like Alice in Wonderland, there is a questionable companion that periodically appears throughout the protagonists' journey, and they just both happen to be a cat. In Caroline's regular life the black cat is nothing special but on the other side of the door, the cat can talk. The cat being able to talk allows the cat to guide and aid Caroline as she learns and makes her way through the sinister world she stumped upon. The cat is not exactly transparent at first but the longer Caroline is in this other world the cat becomes more willing to give up information about the world and help her realize how awful her parents really are. This is much like the cat that is seen in Alice in Wonderland because we see the cat accompanying Alice. The Cheshire cat has much more charisma and magic as it can change its appearance has an unnaturally wide permanent grin and lastly can appear and disappear any part of itself at will. This cat teaches Alice the rules and what happens in Wonderland and most importantly how to survive. Although the cat can be a great guide for Alice it finds amusement and entertainment out of putting her in bad situations and doesn't think twice about doing so.

When it comes to Coraline's other mother and The Queen of Hearts, there are many similarities. Coraline's other mother is made out to be the main villain. She forces Coraline to join her world so she can take control of her and sew the buttons into her eyes. Coraline liked the thought of a new, better life, without knowing what her other mother's true intentions were. The other mother made a deal with Coraline once she captured Coraline's real parents. The deal was that if Coraline was able to find three eyes, they would all be set free. The Queen of Hearts also had an alternative motive in the trail in court. Alice realized that the truth didn't really matter in the new world she was stuck in. The queen didn't care about who did the crime, she just wanted complete control. The queen agreed to free Alice if she proved that she didn't commit the crime, thus situation being similar to Coraline's other mother's agenda.

In both Coraline and Alice in Wonderland, the real worlds are much more dreary than the other worlds. Both Coraline and Alice feel unhappy with their living situation at home. Through the tunnels, the girls see an opportunity for a better life, and they both take it without thinking much about it. They think that the new worlds are much happier and prettier. The girls don't think about the wickedness that there could be in the new worlds. Coraline and Alice are blinded by the new worlds beauty that they're unable to see the evil before it's too late. These comparisons show that you need to be careful with the situations you put yourself in. Sometimes you won't know you've gone too far until you've already faced the consequences. These movies can also be looked at as starting a new chapter in your life. Thus, representing the evilness of the real world you will encounter at some point in your life.

Blake- After watching the movie of Caroline I can't but think that this film's message was to appreciate what you have before it is gone. Caroline's parents don't fit her needs in this story because they are boring and selfish towards themselves at times. Once Caroline gets what she wants which is parents that are outgoing and let her do what she always wants she comes to the realization and sees the cons of this and sees her normal life was better all along. This connects to me because last year I got really sick with the flu and it was really hard for me to breathe out of my nose for a whole week. I thought to myself that whole week "I wish I could breathe out of my nose right now." Any other day or week out of the year I wouldn't think of how simple but valuable it was to breathe out of my nose stress-free. After I went back to being healthy I appreciated how nice it was to breathe out of my nose and not my mouth. Something like this is super simple but sometimes the simple things are the most valuable in life and we don't always appreciate what we have now until it is gone. At the end of Caroline, she realizes that having a normal family is more important and better than having a family who gives her what she wants but is psycho and tries to sow her eyes.
