Here are a variety of examples of pronouns that we can use to appropriately address someone who is part of LGBTQ + community. It also includes the Spanish pronouns as well as the nonverbal pronouns. It is important to keep these in mind so that we can acknowledge and support these communities.

LGBTQ + Senstivity Summary

The session provides educators the basic information on how to support and acknowledge LGBTQ + people. One of the recommended programs as a resource for all LGBTQ + people is the NM GSA (New Mexico Genders and Sexualities Alliance Network. The session also tackles the variety of flags that they represent. And it further explained how these flags differ from each other. Additionally, the session also discussed the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity. According to the speaker, gender identity is how an individual perceives themselves, either male, female, or both. Gender identity includes transgender, non-binary, and two-spirits. On the other hand, sexual orientation is about someone's emotional attraction to another person. The following terms such as gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, heterosexual, and asexual are what we call sexual orientation.

Furthermore, the session also discussed the different types of pronouns including Spanish pronouns that we can use to appropriately address someone and to avoid hurting someone's feelings. The session gave us the opportunity to practice the "they/them/theirs" pronoun. And it was difficult because we keep forgetting to use the correct pronouns.

Lastly, I find this information from the session important because it gives us the knowledge on how we can better support our students that are part of the LGBTQ +. It is also important that we know how to acknowledge them and use the proper pronouns so that they'll feel accepted and supported in their school.
