The main character is extraordinary, and the history if highly exaggerated, the author does this to engage the reader in a story, and use his imagination. Popular until 18th century, used as entertainment  and relaxation.

Paul Bunyan is a tale about the tallest man in Maine.

Pecos Bill tells the story of a boy who was left behind by his family and was raised by coyotes near the Pecos River. 

Gib Morgan: Built an oil rig so high, he had to hinge the top to let the moon go.

Paul Bunyan is a tale about the tallest man in Maine. He wasn't just tall, he was giant. In the tale, people of Maine credit Paul Bunyan for digging their lakes, creating the Grand Canyon, taming a river, and digging Lake Michigan. Paul Bunyan is also recognized as the best lumberjack of all time. He is often seen with his pet Babe, the Blue Ox, who would grow to also be a giant!

Characteristics 

1. The main character accomplishes great feats using strength, skill, and wits.
2. The main character is helped by a powerful object or animal.
3. The author uses exaggeration and humor; the hero brags but also makes fun of him/herself.
5. The story explains how some familiar things began.
6. The hero has a colorful way of speaking.
7. Famous people and places show up in the story.
8. The hero does not like what others call process. More often that not, the hero dies or disappears.
