How have you used goal setting with your students? What does goal setting look like in your classroom?

One of the ways I use goals in my classroom is by setting attainable goals for interim exams. After students take their district assessments, we look at how they performed and, together, we decide on a score we try to attain on the next assessment.

I also use goal setting in the classroom by creating a goal at the beginning of each week. Each week on Monday, students write on a sticky note the goal they have for themselves for the week - it can be as simple as "I hope to make good choices during independent reading" (however, we try to make them more complex as the year continues). At the end of the week, we look back to see if we met our goal. I'm always trying to get the students to reflect upon their goals and their actions.

As I was watching the video about Jason and his unpacking the "I Can" statement in his classroom, I LOVE how each student was able to take control and, in a sense, make a mind map of what they already know, any prior knowledge about the subject, and where they could go from there. It was something I'd love to use more in the upcoming year.

I use student data binders to set goals and keep track of student progress. I also set goals with students for DAs. My students set goals for themselves in content areas, as well as behavior when needed.

I really enjoyed how Jason had his students rate themselves using "fist to five" after discussing the learning target. Seeing the students self-evaluate and engage in meta-cognitive strategies in regards to the learning target stood out to me.

Students set goals to learn 10 new sight words per month. In August, they set goals to learn 10 sight words from the Red sight word list. Students keep track of their progress and "try out" for their red star whenever they feel ready (one opportunity per day). This enables them to determine if they have met their goal or not. If not, they are able to identify which sight words they need to practice more than others.

I would really like to work to beef up this QPTS in my classroom; I'm excited to see what everyone else is doing! I do always share the results of any assessment with my students and we informally talk through their thinking and how they can improve on the next assessment. I think I will take the next step and set goals with my students, especially in reading to further motivate them to succeed!

I really enjoyed the video of the teacher breaking down the learning target. I often do this with my students and use this to introduce new vocabulary. I would love to consistently add in the self assessment piece to get a quick class gauge of how students think they are achieving.

I let my students keep track of their learning with data notebooks. They also set goals for sight words, reading levels, math and writing. We also set goals as a class and individually after each district assessments. Goal setting allow my students the opportunity to be in control of their learning success by keeping track, working to improve and knowing themselves as a learner. I started off this school year really focusing in on the learning target and going over it right after my connect and before my teach. I aspire to be like the teacher in the video. He really got a lot of feedback from the students and that information help him to guide his instruction.

I use goal setting when I work with small groups using Instructional Conversation. Students choose an appropriate goal to engage in conversation. For example, if a student is quiet, he or she may choose to speak up more as a goal. If he or she likes to talk a lot, a good goal would be to listen and encourage others to share their ideas.

As a classroom teacher, goal setting for me has always been on an assessment level such as reading levels or DA scores. We would track monthly our running records and reading level progress. For DA's we would set goals for our score and list ways we could reach our goal. Then we would chart our results and make adjustments according to our progress.

However, informally I would often take status' of the class during writing, and with independent activities and assignments. It allowed the students to follow their progress and stay on track with what was being asked of them.

I want to get better with more frequent goal setting. I hope to provide more constant feedback and motivation for the students to continue to improve. It will provide a lot of insight into my students and their needs, therefore help provide more guidance with my instruction.
