Lighting up some coal to cook some franks, steaks, and burgers are debilitating to the environment! Various methods of obtaining coal, such as mountaintop mining, can cause water pollution via acid mine drainage. Organisms in the water may die off if acid mine drainage occurs, and people may be harmed should they eat any fish in the polluted streams. Mining for coal and other minerals displaces many habitats and often require clearing trees, which are carbon sinks. The most obvious threat from coal is the combustion of it, since it releases massive amounts of carbon dioxide in the environment. Cashews take as much as 1,700 gallons of water per pound to produce! This contributes to an unsustainable use of water. The growing of water-thirsty crops certainly does not alleviate the problem of water conservation. Some solutions we can provide to the problem of unsustainable water usage is to limit our consumption of nuts and grow the nuts ourselves so that a lot of water is conserved while we are growing them. The cashews in the picture are home grown and actually grow on a fruit, known as the cashew apple. Importing nuts, such as the cashew, also does the environment a disservice since fossil fuels are used to transport the nut.
