Vape stores are getting banned and limited to 600 stores in the nation. People are saying that vape stores are far too accessible and that too many teens are vaping. Vaping is very bad for your health. It was made for people to stop smoking, but then teens started to vape and it has become an issue.

vaping can cause lung cancer and make you have trouble sleeping. Most vapes have nicotine in them which is a very addictive substance.

We learned that the difference between smoking and vaping is that smoking delivers nicotine by burning tobacco and vaping can deliver nicotine by heating up a liquid which is a much less harmful way. But it is still harmful to your health.

Overall vaping is very bad for your health and people need to find a way for young teens to stop vaping.

(New Zealanders) about electric vehicles and what they/the government are doing to make it easier and better for people to buy EVs so NZ can transition to a low-emission transport future.

A major benefit of switching to an electric vehicle is that it produces zero emissions when on the road. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, accelerate climate change which has already caused global temperatures to increase.

The cost of charging an EV is significantly cheaper than paying for petrol.

That is it is better to buy an Ev car

50% of people considered ev cars and 62% were concerned petrol cars

There are more people that want the petrol car but isd bad for the environment especially if you have to be on the road every day.

Ev cars are going to become more popular and common. It is expensive but it is better for the environment then what petrol cars are. The humans role in this is too sell the EV cars and making adds to show people. Also by telling them that it is the best thing for the planet.Battery are also bad because where will it end up.It will be bad in the long term for the planet. All of the barry just lay ending up on the landfill.People make the Ev cars but they sometimes does not think about where the battery goes. So they can make a place to but the battery.

Ths chage I will make is i will write to the primister ans tell him to do something

Dear primister

I think that we should change the cars to Ev cars. It is way better for the envorment and it will lower the green gasses. I have shown alot of evidence and if you can see that It can be a proplem .If we can just see that we need to lower the prize of the Ev cars and make it easerie for the people to excice it. We can also make sure that we have enough chargeing point for the ev. It is better for the future and it willl really make the big diffrent if we make the chage now.

kind regards

Emma

1) Position statement - New gas cars can not be made or purchased in NZ by 2030

2) Summary - I agree with this statement because there has been a significant amount of air pollution in the atmosphere. But there has also been a rise in electric vehicles as over 84,000 have been sold in NZ as of June 2023 so there is hope to help slow down the air pollution and banning gas cars by 2030 would really help this.

3) My action plan... Hi (Insert electric car company). I am writing to you with some advice for how you could improve your sales and potentially help slow down air pollution from gas cars. I think it would be a good choice to begin putting as many resources as you can into working towards improving your EVs are there are still issues with your cars such as short battery life and long charging times. If you work towards making the cars as good as they can be, this may help convince people to purchase your cars with all the features and this may help not only the sales for your company, but also help slow down air pollution as this may make people switch from gas cars to EVs which would really help the environment. I hope this helps you in someway and see this being applied to future car making. From Dylan Sell

Position Statement:

Electric Vehicles (The NZ government should ban the purchase of any new cars that use petrol or diesel in their engines from 2030.)

1:Carbon emission is the process of sending carbon and other greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, this is needed for trapping heat in earth's atmosphere to stop us from freezing, however we emit too much carbon and therefore keep earth a bit too hot which means global warming happens.

2:SUVs are very bad for the environment as they emit more than the entire aviation industry, they also emit 15-30% more than an average sedan does, they are larger which means they hurt you more if you’re hit by them, it’s more difficult to see out of them which makes it harder to see children, they also take up more space on the road which makes less room for cycle paths.

3:One of the many advantages of electric vehicles is the improvement in air quality that they can bring. When driving, pure electric vehicles emit no harmful emissions, including carbon dioxide. As a result, air pollution is greatly decreased. Electric vehicles are far superior to petrol and deisel vehicles for road travel because they are far more affordable.

4: Make more electric options

The people that will carry out this solution are the local councils/govt, they have been responsible for creating electric trains and busses so they should be responsible for creating more electric transport methods. “Supporting the uptake of electric vehicles also supports the Government’s overall drive towards a net-zero emissions economy. The government is currently considering additional measures to increase the uptake of electric and low emission vehicles”

This quote shows us that the Govt is already working towards other electric transport methods.

5:If people agreed with the position statement, they might go and buy an electric or hybrid vehicle to support the change and prepare for it, they could also convince their friends or family to go electric.

If somebody disagreed with the position statement, they might try to convince others to stick with gas as well as write to the government asking them to not ban gas vehicles

1) Position Statement -

Nuclear Energy is a high-priority socio-economic problem. It revolves simply around the context of economic prosperity, and technological innovation, in terms of social welfare. Although this seems congruent, the New Zealand environment is fairly unadept to this proposal in terms of environmental beneficiaries. It is in this prospect that New Zealand should continue its legal ban on Nuclear Power production.

2) Summary -

Scientifically, Nuclear Energy production revolves around the process of Nuclear Fission, in which an individual nuclei split to release mass amounts of atomic energy. Nuclear Fusion is the opposite. Famous examples of the production of nuclear energy involve the sun’s internal mechanism, the Chernobyl accident, and Radioisotope Power Systems.

3) My action plan -

I have created a comic relief poster in commemoration of how the continuum of Nuclear Power production in New Zealand would impact the population socially. Wider vehicles means less room for cycling lanes which promote enviro friendly travel.

3) My Action Plan:

Dear (electric vehicle company) I belive you should begin focusing on improving the quality of your vehicles to encourage the NZ population to purchase electric vehicles.

Some improvements you could make include:

Faster charging times - waiting for your EV to charge when it gets low during a long road trip is a very boring experience because you have to wait for ages at some service station doing nothing entertaining.

Improved battery life - Improving the battery life of your EVs would reduce the amount of times drivers have to stop to edure the boring process of charging their vehicle on long drives.

Replaceable Batteries - Currently, when your EVs battery dies for the last time, you need a brand new vehicle because replacing the battery is almost impossible and more expensive. More people would be willing to purchase EVs if they knew that it was easy to service and wouldn't potentially become unusable because the batter didn't want to play nice anymore.

Access to Clean Water

1) Position Statement - Clean drinking water is a human right and EVERY person should have access to safe water

2) Summary - There are several ways humans have contributed to the socio-scientific issue of access to clean water. For example, humans have contributed to pollution of waterways through dumping rubbish, littering, farming runoff and industrial waste just to name a few. This has lead to fewer clean drinking water sources around the world. A solution for this could be to educate people on how much pollution and litter we create in everyday life to try to reduce how much waste we produce. There should also be restrictions and penalties on the amount of pollution companies and farms are allowed to create to help stop ruining water sources, and generate money to help pay for water treatment plants. This could be challenging as it requires a big change, and industries are unwilling to do so if it costs them money. (Please note this is just one way humans are contributing and a potential solution for it, you can include as many as you have researched here).

3) My action plan was to create an educational poster which I then presented to my family, and printed several copies of to put in mailboxes and spread awareness. I have attached the photo of my poster above.

1) Position Statement - The next New Zealand government should immediately enact a Sugar Tax to raise revenue to begin to combat obesity in Aotearoa.

2) Summary - Excess sugar will lead to diabetes, cancer, heart diseases and obesity. The number of obese children rose from 11 million in 1975 to 124 million in 2016. Evidence shows that the children of obese parents are usually also obese. In order to prevent more obesity, a sugar tax can be used in order to lower the amount of sugar consumed by people. It was shown in the UK that when a sugar tax was enacted, the manufacturers gradually lowered the amount of sugar in their product and there was a 20% decrease in consumption. In the US, it was shown it could generate a tax revenue of 13 million USD in 2016.

3) Action plan - I will make a poster about the benefits of sugar tax to educate people on the matter.

The ban would accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and expand charging infrastructure, which is vital to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Climate Change Commission had recommended a ban on importing and selling new fossil fuel vehicles by 2035, and the New Zealand government has signed a pledge to ban internal combustion vehicles by 2040 or earlier. Advocacy groups such as Drive Electric have called for a ban on internal combustion engine vehicles (petrol and diesel) by 2030, following in the footsteps of the UK, Japan, and others. The Clean Car Discount scheme, which provides rebates for low-emission vehicles, is already in place in New Zealand. The ban on petrol and diesel cars would help improve air quality and reduce the country’s dependence on imported oil.

3) My action plan -

To write a letter to the NZ Government

Why should people stop using the petrol cars?

1) Why should people stop using the petrol cars and why?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are more energy efficient than gasoline or diesel cars, using less energy to move the same distance and producing less waste heat. They can convert about 60% of the electricity from the grid into power for the wheels, while gasoline cars can only convert about 20% of the energy from fuel into power for the wheels.

EVs reduce emissions and improve air quality. As they do not have tailpipes, they do not emit any harmful gases or particles that contribute to air pollution and climate change. However, the environmental impact of EVs depends on how the electricity they use is generated. If the electricity comes from renewable sources, such as solar or wind, then EVs have almost zero emissions. If the electricity comes from fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas, then EVs still have some indirect emissions from the power plants.

While many electric cars are marketed as zero-emission vehicles, this is not entirely true. Battery electric cars may not release greenhouse gases from their tailpipes, but some emissions are created in the process of creating and charging electric vehicles. However, compared to internal combustion vehicles, EVs have a substantially lower environmental effect.

EVs have the potential to significantly reduce air pollution when they become economically viable. Countries like Norway and states like California aim to ban gasoline-powered automobiles by 2025 and 2030, respectively.

2)But what is the best course of action to get there?

The path to widespread EV adoption is complex. Outright bans on gasoline cars, like those proposed in Norway and California, are one approach. However, scholars like Stephen P. Holland, Erin T. Mansur, and Andrew J. Yates suggest a more nuanced strategy, evaluating costs and benefits and developing effective strategies to reduce gasoline use.

3)Is outlawing anything a good idea?

Scholars like Stephen P. Holland, Erin T. Mansur, and Andrew J. Yates provide a methodology for evaluating costs and benefits, clarifying significant unknown parameters, and developing successful strategies to reduce the use of gasoline.

Transportation significantly influences air pollution both locally and globally. New technologies like EVs, fuel cell vehicles, biofuel-powered vehicles, and better gasoline vehicles show promise for reducing this pollution. EVs are distinctive within this group of technologies.

Owning an EV is like high-fiving our planet. We believe you have every right to be proud of your purchase because choosing electricity over gasoline is just the right thing to do for our environment. Fully electric vehicles have no exhaust emissions, implying that driving one emits no harmful substances into the atmosphere.

4) How air pollution impacts on the environment?

Like air pollution, climate change impacts vulnerable populations the most, including our children, seniors, and communities already disadvantaged by pollution and poverty. As a pediatrician, I see firsthand the harm caused by our oil addiction. Children living in polluted areas experience higher rates of asthma and slowed lung development. This is a terrible burden we are putting on our children and future generations. We must dedicate all available resources to get off fossil fuels to protect children today and into the future.

1) Position Statement - Vapes should be removed from ALL dairies and the distance between specialist vape shops, schools and maraes should be increased to two kilometers.

2) Summary - Vaping is collectively a growing issue impacting many young people and teenagers across New Zealand. Vaping is further enforced in many ways such as by many companies and businesses that create and sell vape products, doing this by marketing new flavours and vapes that appeal to a teenage target audience, in order to make more sales. Dairies and stores that sell vapes that are located near schools and maraes also can give access to vapes to teenagers and minors causing a higher risk of addiction and use of vapes. I believe that in order to prevent the use of vapes by minors, vape stores shouldn’t be close to schools and maraes, but dairies that sell vape products should still be allowed to sell vapes in order to stay in business, as long as regulations and laws around selling vapes are still in place and followed. In order for this to happen, the government could enforce new laws around the selling of vapes to make sure that children don’t have access to them from dairies.

3) My action plan - My action plan was to write a letter to express concern about the popularity of youth vaping and voicing opinions on how to fix the issue - such as new vaping regulations to restrict use to only people quitting smoking, and preventing the sale of vapes near schools etc.

Link to our letter: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_PwBaHkMoD5zMkPzvT90ZcQi7gl53TTCsbyrnvmfQFU/edit

1) Position statement - The government should create a permanent ban on all vapes in New Zealand.

2) Summary - Vaping coats the lungs in a toxic substance that may contain carcinogenic chemicals. Things commonly found in vapor, such as benzene and heavy metals, are known to cause lung cancer and pose other health risks. Vaping is influenced by many companies and businesses that create and sell vape products, doing this by marketing new flavours and vapes that appeal to a teenage target audience, in order to make more sales.

3) My action plan - To write a latter to the government expressing concern for vape usage increase throughout youth. This would encourage the government to ban all forms of vaping including rechargeable devices and excluding prescription vapes to help smokers quit.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_PwBaHkMoD5zMkPzvT90ZcQi7gl53TTCsbyrnvmfQFU/edit

1) Position Statement- all countries including New Zealand should reduce the level of pollution.

2) Summary-The need to mitigate ocean pollution is of paramount importance for all countries around the globe. Oceans, hosting a wide diversity of marine life, play a crucial role in maintaining global biodiversity. However, the increasing presence of pollutants in the oceans seriously threatens the survival of various species, compromising marine ecosystems and disrupting the food chain.

Furthermore, the food security of many communities is intricately linked to marine resources. Pollution can compromise the quality and safety of seafood, directly impacting populations dependent on these resources for sustenance.

Economically, oceans play a vital role. Sectors such as fishing, coastal tourism, and maritime transportation are essential for the global economy. Ocean pollution, however, poses a substantial threat to these industries, generating significant economic impacts and jeopardizing the livelihoods of many communities.

Beyond local impacts, ocean pollution also has global implications. Oceans play a crucial role in climate regulation, absorbing carbon dioxide and influencing climate patterns. Interference in this process, caused by ocean pollution, contributes to global climate change.

Human health is also directly linked to ocean quality. Contamination of seafood by toxic chemicals can have serious consequences for those depending on these foods, affecting the health of coastal communities.

The responsibility to preserve oceans and reduce pollution is a task shared by all nations. Ocean pollution knows no national borders, and individual actions have collective repercussions on marine ecosystems. Global collaboration is therefore essential to ensure the sustainability of oceans and preserve their critical role in global environmental regulation.

Ultimately, the preservation of oceans is not only an environmental concern but also a necessity to ensure the well-being of communities, economic and environmental stability, and long-term prosperity for future generations.

3) My action Plan- I created a poster with information that shows how pollution is influenced and shared it in a group with some friends.

1. Position Statement

Vapes should be removed from ALL dairies and the distance between the specialist vape shops, schools and maraes should be increased to two kilometers.

2. Summary

I agree with this statement because I think that dairies that sell Vapes are easy to access because of how close it is from schools. If the dairies aren't close to schools and marae then this will make is less accessible for younger students who are in the area.

3. Action Plan

My action plan is to make all Vapes less accessible and available by making sure that less advertisements about Vapes are released near shops and dairies. I will start by making sure that shop/dairy owners are qualified to sell vapes and if they are not I will inform them about what they are selling/advertising which are Vapes. I will also make sure that if they choose to advertise the product then I tell them to make sure that it's for the appropriate audiences like older people who are around 18-20+ years old and not to the younger audience like 10-15 years old.

1) Position statement - The NZ government should impose a 10% tax on all processed food to reduce the prevalence of heart disease and gather funds to assist with the cost of helping those already struggling with the disease.

2) Summary - Humans produce processed food and send it all throughout the county to supermarkets, butchers and store. Salty, sweet and fatty processed food is like a drug. It's everything a human needs to survive because it keeps weight on the body but too much of it can be extremely unhealthy for you. Processed food becomes addictive which causes the consumers to buy more and more of it which is how the heart disease begins. By creating and continuing to distribute processed food to the public, it will create more risk for the consumers of heart disease.

3) My Action Plan - I will send an email to the government requesting to put a higher tax on all processed food to reduce consumers from buying it.

Email: Hi NZ government, I am writing to you requesting to increase the tax rate on all processed food. Consumers tend to opt for cheaper products which are usually processed and unhealthy. The risk of heart disease is increasing due to the food people are eating. An easy solution to encourage consumers to eat healthier is to make the unhealthy, processed food more expensive and increase the tax.

Yours sincere,

Zeta Pancha
