Wilfred Laurier was canada's first french speaking Prime minister. Laurier was in office for 15 years from 1896-1911.During the south African war it was naturally implied that Britain would be involved as well. Sir Wilfrid Laurier contributed by sending an army of volunteers. Part of the compromise was that Canada pay for the equipment and transportation and Britain would pay the troops and be responsible for sending them home. At the end 8600 Canadian troops had volunteered to go to war.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier once said.. " Two races share today the soil of canada. These people had not always been friends. but I hasten to say it, there is no longer any family here but the human family. It matters not the language people speak, or the alters at which they kneel". Laurier was right, when he took over french and English Canadians were constantly divided. But as first french prime minister he manged to bring them together. since he was prime minister Canada population has started to expand making Canada multicultural.
