Hi, here is a collaborative writing session to carry on with out 'Art and power' sequence. Here is how it works: 1) Watch the following video of a famous song by U2: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dpnu8OBvGgK9BNelfS12Dd5r7C-geyGQ/view?usp=sharing 2) Do your own research to understand what the song is about (place, time, historical background, causes, political and social issues involved, evolutions and situation in the present...) 3) In 30 to 60 words, write a post IN ENGLISH about what you have just learned. IMPORTANT! Read the other posts written by your classmates to make sure that you are not writing exactly the same things and repeating yourselves. You can write several posts if necessary. REMEMBER to identify yourself at the end of your posts.

The song talks about a mass killing that happened in Derry on 30th of January 1972. A group of Irish was protesting for Northern Ireland civil rights. The British military received the information that there was a IRA (Irish republican army) sniper among the protesters. The killing happened during the war between the ira and the British army. The ira was fighting for their civil rights. It was forbidden for the Irish to assemble during that time but they still did it in Derry on 30th of January 1972. There was some fights between the protesters and the army and they decided to block the access to a street. Some protesters still decided to try to cross the blocage and they were shot by British soldiers. In the end, 28 people were shot and half died. They weren’t all trying to cross the blocage, some were just walking by, and most of them were peaceful protesters. We now know that there weren’t any ira snipers and that the killing was not justified. U2 made a tribute to the victims through this song. Maud GARCIA

Since 1960s there is discrimination against catholic in Northern Ireland who is mostly protestant. Therefore, NICRA promotes the equality between them. However, demonstrators were attacked by protestant loyalist and Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). So, violence increase. In 1969, a protestant walks of Apprentice Boys of Derry took place in Derry and passed near catholic neighborhood Bogside. So catholic make barrier and during three days RUC try to stop this but she was not a success and government of Northern Ireland calls British army. The 9 August 1971 begin the Operation Demetrius. Next there is prohibition of walk. But NICRA organized a walk the 30 January 1972 in Derry against the Operation. The authority accepts this...and Bloody Sunday takes place.

This song of U2 refers to the "Bloody Sunday", the day of january 30, 1972 when british regular army shot on the people. The nothern Ireland has been controlled by the Great Britain for a long time and there always was opposition from the Irish side over the centuries, But this day isnurgent catholics whose wanted civil rights and the freedom of worship have made an organized protest and the british army, probably in reason of many other mutinies, killed 13 of them. This song shows the unity of rebels, who were fighting for their civil rights for the years, on this day.

The song Bloody Sunday from U2 refers to the massacre which took place on the 30th January 1972. This was horrible at the time : near 28 persons lost their lives. The British army didn’t care about the age of the victims. Yet they were just defending their civil rights. Furthermore they wanted to demonstrate in peace, with no violence but the message was not the same for the army.
I think you have already understood but the name Bloody Sunday comes from the horrible deaths of several people in terrible circumstances. The music was a real tribute to this tragic event. They have related real facts. As an instance, when a man shows up with a white flag in the video, it supports the idea that people wanted to do it peacefully. With this type of tribute we can give a moving message. The music allows people to put into words feelings which are really hard to carry.

« Sunday Bloody Sunday » is a song of the Irish group of rock U2, which was write to denunciate a terrible incident. On 30th January, the British army shot about twenty people who were manifesting their refusals of weapons and violence. There was a first trial where the army was protected by saying a lie – that the civilians who were shot actually were part of a terrorist group and they attack the army. However, 30 years later a second trial occurred, in this trial the army was recognised as the only guilty and the civilians were victims.

The music is very appreciated by the public with its very famous rhythm and melody which draws us from the first moments of the piece. Bono, the singer, says that he wants to, with this song, pay homage to all the victims.
Over the years, Bono and the band's message grew stronger, making this one of U2's most iconic titles.

Bourgeois Nino
