pt3 (why did the artists write what they wrote and how it relates to Independence and survival

Lil Peep, XXXTentacion, Juice WRLD, Slipknot, System of a Down, and Pierce the Veil—all share themes of survival and independence in their music, but their reasons for writing what they wrote often come from personal experiences, struggles, and the desire to reflect on larger societal or emotional issues. Here's why these artists wrote the kind of music they did:

Lil Peep:

Lil Peep (Gustav Åhr) was deeply influenced by his personal struggles with mental health, substance abuse, and relationships. Much of his music reflects his feelings of isolation, heartbreak, and the pain of navigating life as a misunderstood outsider. Peep used his music as an emotional outlet, often blending emo, punk, and hip-hop to express the raw, vulnerable parts of his life. Themes of survival come through in his desire to continue pushing forward despite these challenges. Peep’s music was both a reflection of his pain and a way to connect with others going through similar struggles. He wanted to make people feel understood.

Why Peep wrote what he wrote:
Peep dealt with depression, drug addiction, and the challenges of relationships, and he often expressed these themes through his lyrics. His goal was to bring light to the darker sides of life and provide solace for those dealing with similar issues. His music reflected a struggle for survival and finding beauty amidst pain.

XXXTentacion:

XXXTentacion (Jahseh Onfroy) was known for his turbulent life and emotional music, which often mirrored his inner battles with depression, anger, and confusion. He was open about his mental health struggles and used music as a way to process his emotions and traumas. XXXTentacion often explored themes of survival in both an emotional and literal sense, grappling with feelings of mortality, inner demons, and the consequences of his actions. His music was raw and often introspective, making it relatable to people struggling with similar emotional or psychological difficulties.

Why XXXTentacion wrote what he wrote:
XXXTentacion used his music as a way to cope with his own emotional instability and personal traumas, including struggles with depression, anxiety, and a violent past. He sought redemption and healing through his art, often reflecting on survival and the importance of finding hope in darkness.

Juice WRLD:

Juice WRLD (Jarad Higgins) frequently wrote about the battle between addiction, mental health struggles, and heartbreak. He was highly introspective in his music, often using his songs as a way to deal with his emotions and the pressures of fame. Juice WRLD's lyrics reflect the duality of success and the internal battles he faced—while on the outside he was gaining fame and fortune, inside he was struggling with emotional pain, substance abuse, and a search for meaning. His music often acts as a plea for survival and a way to work through his self-destructive tendencies.

Why Juice WRLD wrote what he wrote:
Juice WRLD was transparent about his struggles with addiction, love, and mental health. His music was a therapeutic outlet for him, and he often used his platform to bring awareness to these issues. By sharing his personal battles, he hoped to inspire others to confront their own struggles and survive their demons.

Slipknot:

Slipknot, a heavy metal band led by Corey Taylor, writes music that often channels feelings of anger, rebellion, and alienation. The band’s members have had their own personal struggles with mental health, substance abuse, and feelings of being outcasts in society. Slipknot’s music often focuses on emotional and societal survival, challenging systems of control and questioning societal norms. Their aggressive style reflects the intensity of their emotions, and their lyrics often explore the chaos of the human mind and modern society. Themes of survival are evident in their emphasis on resilience and fighting against forces that try to suppress individuality.

Why Slipknot wrote what they wrote:
Slipknot uses their music to express rage and frustration with societal systems that they see as broken or oppressive. They aim to give voice to the disillusioned and those who feel marginalized. Their music is an outlet for survival through rebellion and self-expression in a world they perceive as toxic.

System of a Down:

System of a Down’s music is politically charged and often critiques government corruption, war, societal issues, and the environmental crisis. The band’s Armenian heritage, and their awareness of the Armenian Genocide, has informed their activism and desire to shed light on global injustices. Their songs focus on survival in a chaotic and unjust world, often questioning authority and advocating for the oppressed. System of a Down uses their platform to speak out against systemic problems, with survival and independence being recurring themes in their lyrics, as they encourage people to think for themselves and fight back against corrupt systems.

Why System of a Down wrote what they wrote:
The band is motivated by a strong sense of activism and a desire to address political and social injustices. They want to inspire critical thinking and independent action, emphasizing survival in a world filled with corruption, war, and environmental devastation. Their music is both a call to arms and a way to process their frustration with the world’s state.

Pierce the Veil:

Pierce the Veil’s music often centers on personal pain, mental health struggles, and emotional survival. Many of their songs are inspired by personal experiences with love, loss, and feelings of isolation. Their emotional vulnerability and raw storytelling resonate with listeners who have gone through similar experiences. The band frequently discusses mental health, trauma, and the difficulties of navigating emotional turmoil. Their focus on survival comes from overcoming personal obstacles, heartbreak, and feelings of inadequacy.

Why Pierce the Veil wrote what they wrote:
The band draws inspiration from personal experiences, especially with love, heartbreak, and the emotional rollercoaster of young adulthood. They write about survival in terms of emotional resilience, aiming to connect with fans who might be going through similar pain. Their music is an outlet for personal expression and a way to help others feel less alone in their struggles.

In summary, these artists write about survival and independence as a way to cope with their personal struggles and as a reflection of societal issues. Their music serves as an outlet for emotional expression, and they aim to resonate with listeners who may be going through similar battles, providing a sense of connection and solidarity.

"I'm Still Standing" is a song written by Elton John about a man who had been through some sort of heartbreak and had been left in ruins, but managed to build himself back up from scratch.

"Pickin' up the pieces of my life without you on my mind" tells us that the man that the song is written about has moved on from the woman who had broken his heart, and he is able to rebuild the life that she had destroyed.

"Lookin' like a true survivor, feelin' like a little kid" shows us that he is still going strong despite what he's been through, and has gotten back the child-like joy in life, seeing the good in small things and admiring the mundane as if it were a renaissance-era mural composed by a fine French artist.

(Jorjey)

What qualities do these songs discuss in their lyrics?

In 'The Eye Of The Tiger.' the lyrics talk about the qualities of survival, and fighting to be the best of the best. The song also explores the qualities of resilience, not giving up in the face of danger, and perseverance.

What does the music and the way it is sung say about survival?

The lyrics are basically saying that to survive, you have to face your challenges and fears, and not give up, even if things look bad.

What similes and metaphors does your song use to express the idea of survival or independence?

The song uses the way a tiger stalks it prey, to express their view of survival. This line below is a great example, as to me it feels like it's saying that sometimes to survive, you need to face your challenges, and look at them, not run away from them.

'And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night.

In pokemn xy the legendary pokemon represent life (xerneas) and death (yveltal). In the story the team magma are attempting to rebuild a world that they believe they must first break for their survival. The player character must defeat team magma for the survival of the planet.

One can also argue that all pokemon stories are about independence as gaining a pokemon companion is viewed as a sort of right of passage in the pokemon universe. The player character (usually 10 years old because that's when you get a starter pokemon in the show) the traverses the world alone with their pokemon team.

Sam Cawthorn's accident

Following his accident, Sam found a way to grow as a direct result of this accident by working through the many injuries he faced as a result of the accident, and by proving many of the doctors claims that he would never be able to walk or play the guitar again wrong. By doing that, he was able to move forward and improve his life and do many amazing things, such as being able to play the guitar with one hand. In fact, Sam even said in the video: 'And that's actually obviously how I have bounced forward, and how I am awake at the wheel.' Sam faced many challenges as a result of the accident. He had his leg amputated, he was confined to a wheelchair for 1 year, and besides his accident, he was also kicked out of school for engaging in bad behaviour. -L.N

Sierra had drug-addicted parents, she never felt safe and was never protected. No one took care of her or her siblings because nobody was ever home. She had to become an adult very quickly she took care of herself and her brother. She had to cook her owns meals from food that her grandmother gave her, and she had to drag water to her house. Her dad was abusive she always had bruises from where he hit her. She was neglected and didn’t even know how to brush her own teeth. When she went into foster care she got therapy, counselling, became an honours student and made friends. K.H
