A favorite family tradition my family has is getting together on Christmas Eve for a Slovakian-style holiday dinner. For our Christmas Eve meal, we have a large dinner made up of pierogis, mushroom soup, bread with honey, and fish. We also read a Slovak traditional script and crack a walnut known for attracting good energy, luck, and fortune. The kids have to eat, sing Christmas Songs, then they can open gifts. Every year a different kid gets to be a ELF and help "Santa" pass out gifts. The grandkids always take a picture on the stairs with my Mom. We end the night by going to midnight mass.

We have a dedicated space in the basement for this each year. It’s fun to turn off the tv and just talk together over a puzzle.

Outside of the major holidays, my family gets together with our boys, and both sets of grandparents prior to Halloween each year. We go to a pumpkin patch and then we carve the pumpkins and go out and light them together. This is and has been a great way to spend time together where we are making something and seeing the creativity of each person and their creation.

My family is very special! We get together to celebrate holidays and special occasions like my daughters Adoption Celebration! We love to cook and bake, so we make all our holiday family meals at home together. Then we dress up and take family pictures before we eat. One of my favorite childhood traditions is making sugar cookies and decorating them. Now my daughter and my nephews love to make and decorate the Christmas Sugar Cookies too! We also started taking an annual family vacation to Destin where my mom grew up. My parents met and married there too! I have so many wonderful memories of going there when we were growing up! Now my parents, myself, my daughter and my siblings come and bring their families when they can. In 2019, my whole family was able to come to Destin to celebrate my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary! It was an amazing trip! I love my family!

One of our favorite family traditions is to make enchiladas every year for New Years Eve! My grandmother is Mexican and has passed down all the best recipes. We make enchiladas and pozole together. We all work together with one person flipping the tortillas, other people putting them in the sauce and more people filling them. It’s an all day event and so much fun! We’ll usually make over 100 since my immediately family is so big. It’s something I hope to pass down to my children as well!

Since my husband and I started dating we have always celebrate Christmas Eve at his mother’s house. This tradition has went on for 10 years. We always spend the night. My mother-in-law gives us Christmas pajamas and always plans an activity. We have in the past we have baked cookies, painted ornaments, tried new recipes, or played a family game. When we wake up we open presents and have a big Christmas breakfast. Since our son has been born we have continued this tradition. We will take the presents over to my mother-in-laws and Santa visits him there.
