Staring at yourself for however long it takes you to complete the work. Things we may not like about our appearance are right there confronting us. 

Perhaps that is why there is such a tradition of artists doing self portraits? Because to do one you are forced to work with things about yourself you like and things about yourself you don't like.  That can be a very powerful process, especially with those things we don't like about ourselves. Yet, we can work with them and maybe even see them in a different way, a more positive way, because of how we made art with our face. We can grow to appreciate ourselves or at least understand ourselves in a different way through self portraits. 

I had never done a digital self portrait before. While I am more experienced and comfortable with traditional media such as pencils, pen and ink and paint, I found this process to be interesting and I like the digital result. What is nice about working digitally is the "undo" button. You will always be your harshest critic, and I feel and as though that saying applies to how I feel for this overall drawing. I’m not familiar with digital art to begin with, so using this program was difficult. I found many struggles, but my favorite aspect of it was how easily you could make colors and layering. However, with this being said,  I still prefer traditional. I’m more used to it, and I find blending, creating shapes, and overall drawing to be easier for me! I believe lots of artists do self portraits of themselves, to not only show what they look like, but show what their work looks like and how they see/ express themselves! From looking at an artist's self portrait of themselves, you can see details they added, in which they may perceive they have, or the overall picture is what the artist portrays themselves to look like. It’s another way of self-expression and often you can see the artists looks, their mood, and more characteristics of themselves, all from one self portrait!

Well I think the reason why artist tend to do a portrait of themself is probably because its fun to see how precise you can create a piece of art to your own face and just make a portrait of yourself, you can also test new techniques on your own portrait and if you ruin it, you won't feel as bad than if you ruined someone else’s portrait.  You can learn new techniques and new ways to create better details and also while your doing a self portrait of yourself, you may also find some features of your face that you've never noticed.
Doing a digital drawing on google drawing is much different than doing it with pencil, you don't have as much control over the tools and if you click to close that the last place you clicked, it assumes that its a double click and stops the line ruining your shape. You also can't get a perfect color in google drawings, its never accurate. I much prefer doing it by pencil and hand. Which soon became transformed into a full-on look of how my true facial features look like, that has become a representation of myself which proudly turned into a piece of art.What I learned during the process of creating the self-portrait (digitally), is that you are still yourself which is what matters most in terms of who you are. And, no matter if you look old, young or even middle aged you still have a look to pull off.  :)

Rather than drawing the self-portrait on paper with the pencil, we created  it digitally. I think that drawing digitally gives you an advantage to do things that can accommodate your interests and need into adding what you want without being too stressful. However, something they both have in common is that they are both time consuming which is something that is normal conducting with art and in this subject. So, for know... I prefer the digital way, since it is an appropriate choice at this time and since I also actually prefer it more. Although, I would still like to try out the hand drawn self-portraits as an act of experience and amusement. Thank you.

After knowing my face for the past thirteen years, it felt weird to stare at this drawing and say it was that same face. I think that the finished product looks a whole lot better than the beginning of the process, though. The shading using the shapes was different, and I think that when you start looking at it closely you can pick apart everything and sort them into the layers - especially my dog. For hundreds of years, artists have done self-portraits using different methods, and I think that this is a representation of how exactly they think of themselves. The colors and expressions that they captured of themselves were purposely chosen, and can give a lot away about their personal perceptions. This felt wayy different than the drawing that we did by hand, and I’m a lot more proud of this one. After this experience, I’m pretty sure that (at least comparing the portraits I’ve done) I like digital art a bit better than traditional art. It was just different in the parts that were frustrating and the parts that worked out really well, but overall they were both great and this one is my definite favorite. The final product looks good though and I'm proud of it, although it took many trials and errors to get certain things right such as my skin colour, my lips and my hair.

I think that artists make self portraits because it's a fun way to challenge yourself and to see if you can get your face right and you can represent how you see yourself through the colour and/or shapes you add. Additionally, artists may have made self portraits for many years because they wanted to see how they look like to themselves rather than how they look like to other people. 
You can learn a lot about your face from making a self portrait, you can spot tiny details that you haven't noticed before and maybe after you have finished, you may view yourself differently.

It felt different because when we did it on paper I kept messing up and if I had the perfect little detail but accidentally ruined it, I don't have an undo button unlike when I did it digitally, they both took so much time to complete and on both of them I had to restart and fix and erase. I honestly prefer how this one turned out rather than the one we did with traditional paper and pencil, it just looks much better. I found it rather difficult to get the exact color and shading that I wanted, as it would always look strange. I also think that artists can learn a great deal about themselves both physically but also emotionally and how their natural face shows emotions. The main difference between making the portrait digitally as opposed to drawing it with a pencil was that I could work in layers and I learned how I can make details by layering shapes. I learned that on the laptop, when editing digitally things will look a bit different, hight, length etc. To be honest, when it comes to drawing on paper and pencil we can control what were doing. Throughout working ive faced several challenges. In the beginning, when editing the sizes. I really enjoyed doing the art assignment though, was hard and got easier! I think I am pretty fine with both; but i would still prefer pencil/paper due to the shading. In the end, we all learn  and achieve something !
