In  most of the story, Malala is fighting against the Taliban for women's rights. Right before part 5, Malala is even shot by a Taliban member. Malala is an advocate for children and women's education, so she was definitely affected by the missile that hit the Khushal school early in chapter 17.

The Taliban does not want women to go to school, unlike Malala's beliefs that children, male or female should go to school. The Taliban does not like this, which is the reason they made death threats against her, and shot her before part 5. After being shot she started the Malala Fund to help over 130,000 girls and women that need an education in terrorist-run places.
