Hawthorne chooses to give the name Faith to the woman that Young Goodman Brown is leaving behind. Not only does it represent her, but he is morally leaving his faith behind when he goes into the forest, and giving in to the temptation of the forest to meet the Devil. "'Faith kept me back awhile,' replied the young man" (Hawthorne 2). In this situation, Young Goodman Brown was held back by his wife, Faith, and his faith to morality. These two entities together held Goodman Brown back from temptation, until he entered the forest.

Snake/Serpent

Hawthorne uses a serpent to represent the evil temptations experienced by people on their journey of life. The devil greets Brown with a staff that resembles a writhing snake, and tempts him to continue on into the forest as the Goodman questions him, " 'Sayest thou so?' replied he of the serpent, smiling apart. 'Let us walk on, nevertheless, reasoning as we go; and if I convince thee not thou shalt turn back' " (Hawthorne 2). The traveler tries to convince Brown to go with him deeper into the dark and unknown woods. Hawthorne includes the fact that he is the man 'of the serpent,' further illustrating how the snake represents evil temptation on the journey of life.

Young Goodman Brown's journey stands for the journey of life. Along your journey of life you will experience temptations that will try to side track you. Hawthorne uses the woods to show the journey of life and Goodman Brown represents everyone on this journey.
" Goodman Brown felt himself justified in making more haste on his present evil purpose. He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind." (Hawthorne 8). In this quote Goodman Brown is entering his journey of life where he will run into his temptations.

Pink

Pink was the color of Faith's ribbon, who represented both his wife and his faith to his religion. Pink is a youthful color, resembling a childlike innocence. To make pink, white and red need to be mixed, white representing purity, while red shows the contrast of sins and impurities. Hawthorne shows the duality of the color as Goodman Brown begins to second guess himself along his journey. He writes, "But something fluttered lightly down through the air, and caught on the branch of a tree. The young man seized it, and beheld a pink ribbon. “My Faith is gone!” cried he, after one stupefied moment. “There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come, devil! for to thee is this world given.'” (Hawthorne 5). From then on, he spirals into fits of uncertainty. He believes his faith to be gone, so he succumbs to the temptations of the devil, representing the red. However, he hears her voice, taking on a glimmer of hope, representing the white.
