You Can Keep the Cape! 

 

Often times as women, we naturally carry a great deal, physically and emotionally.  We 

find ourselves taking on many things because we’ve been conditioned to believe it’s what 

we are designed to do; our unspoken responsibility.  We’ve been told on a number of 

occasions; The Lord will not give me more than I can bear! We take those words and 

self-equip & train ourselves to be the mystical superhero for our spouses, families, 

friends, colleagues, church family, clients and even our pets.  Generations after 

generations of black women ‘Save the Day’ with our superpowers navigating through life 

with our skillfully designed ‘cape’, solving the problems of others.  What about taking 

care of ME, SELF? Today, I give myself permission to do my best, be my best, to say 

‘NO’ and to take time for myself.  I decree, I’m an unapologetic, beautiful, strong, 

intelligent, passionate, caring, hardworking black woman who no longer wants to be the 

SUPERHERO.  

So...YOU CAN KEEP THE CAPE!  

 

Charm also provides support to districts that focuses on increasing partnerships between all stakeholders within the school community through professional development and guided support.  Areas of expertise include mental health support and guidance, RTI/MTSS processes, cultural competence and awareness, technology integration, school culture and climate, and classroom management. 

 

Prior to starting a business, Charm served as the Director of Special Education at a charter school located in Hammond Indiana.  She is the recipient of the 2017 Mayor’s Commission on Disabilities Individual Adult Award.  She was nominated by staff members who worked under her leadership for creating programs that provided reading and math intervention, enforcing policy and procedural manuals for the special education department, implementing response to intervention practices, facilitating professional development for staff and after school workshops for parents that she personally led with support from community social service agencies.

 

Outside of professional endeavors, Charm is a wife of 13+ years, and mother to a 13-year-old son, Cameron, and a 9-year-old daughter, Carmen, who are both competitive swimmers and play violin for Lyrical Strings Orchestra.  She has been a member of the Gary Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. since 2019, a member of the Gary Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and is the former Vice President of Northwest Indiana Lighthouse Charter Schools. 

 

Charm was born in Chicago Illinois, raised in St. Louis Missouri, and returned to the south suburbs of Chicago where she graduated from Bloom High School.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Governors State University, Graduate Degrees from Calumet College of St. Joseph and Purdue University in Psychology, Special Education, and Building Level Administration (Principal Licensure).  Her family settled in Northwest Indiana in 2014, hoping to provide a consistent and structured educational environment for her son, then entering Kindergarten.  Their hopes were to build and grow in a community to support the overall growth and development of their children. Charm wholeheartedly and unequivocally believes that building community support and development will strengthen family units and lead to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities.
