1. What benefits did two recent Canadian studies find with regards to reading fiction?

-The studies found that reading can cause a short term increase in empathy, improve decision-making, curtail snap judgements, and make people more comfortable with uncertainty.

2.) What are the repercussions of the study’s findings for our schools?

-In a world that grows more and more complex and chaotic, increased reading in our schools can contribute to our next generations growing up to a sense of empathy and the ability to make hard choices which will help them navigate whatever challenges come their way. It will also make them productive and approachable. However the issue is that reading for leisure is decreasing and this means that the benefits of reading are not obtain by our students

3.) Who would benefit from reading fiction?

-People who find it hard to be receptive to their peers ideas and experiences stand to gain the most from reading fiction.

4.) Why does the author describe reading fiction as a ‘dressrehearsal for life’?

-It is because reading allows one to become comfortable with the chaos and ambiguity that is prevalent in the fictional world and this conditions a person to become more accepting of the chaos and ambiguity in the real world.

5.) In your opinion, how can reading fiction benefit students in their studies and their future life?

-In addition to instilling empathy which helps you navigate society by letting you gauge someone else’s feelings and respond with kind and in a more basic sense, reading fiction also helps students build their conversational skills and their vocabulary. It also helps students make good decisions under pressure.
