The November Gales also known as "The Witch of November" is when strong forces of wind blows across the Great Lakes of Ontario, around the end of Autumn. This is the force's way of saying hello to the winter season's arrival. You may wonder why it's called a witch, I'll tell you why. It was named after a song called: The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It was sung by a Canadian singer-songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot; a song written for a tribute to a shipwreck.

On November 10, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald ship had sunk into the great depth of the Great Lake. This shape was known for its size. The autumn gale had taken the ship down along with the 29 crew members. This song has not only explained what had happened that day, but it has also educated many people on the effect that the November gales have on water. The importance to take safety precautions have also increased ever since.

If you have ever seen or heard of the Lake Superior weather around late autumn, you know that it is usually gloomy and cold. Wind pressure will often reach 40-55 miles per hour. (Kaul,2021) This is caused by a weather phenomenon called mid-latitude cyclone. The wind circles counter clockwise around an area that has a lower pressure system and a high pressure.
The wind in this region is caused by the air pressure within the distance. The greater the air pressure, the higher the wind pressure will be; causing bigger waves in the lake.

We now know what causes it and where, but what's happening behind the scenes? How does it all work?

1. It all starts with: Wind. The cause of wind is the different atmospheric pressures that are in result of temperature changes. (Air Temperature)

2. Two primary Factors that creates wind patterns are the heating patterns between the equator and poles, alongside the rotation of the earth.

3. In fall it gets colder because the earth tries to reach an equilibrium state of pressure and temperature. (Merlot,2022)

The Great has its own "low pressure". When a storm hits the lake the low pressure and the high pressure combine, increasing the strength of the storm. As months go by the lake's water cools down and the low pressure isn't as strong, therefore there is a decrease in storms.
