It is said that Queen Mary of Bourbon, Bride of Ferdinand II, loved sumptuous celebrations to which many people participated. According to rumors of inhabitants of the area, still today, passing by night in the streets near the palace, you can  see from the windows the lights of parties and the shadows of dancing people. Another story is linked to the ghost of Prince Charles III of Borbon. He was Ferdinand II's brother, he wanted to marry a beautiful Irish tourist but the his brother the king didn’t accept this marriage and he lost all his possessions and Royal titles. So the Prince Charles escaped abroad with his lover. According to the legend, the ghost of Charles wanders in the rooms of the old palace seeking justice for what he missed for love.

The building  became the seat of the Spanish Viceroys, then the Austrians and later the Borbone kings. After the unification of Italy, the palace was used as a residence by the Savoia dinasty. The construction of the building was entrusted to Domenico Fontana, an engineer and architect among the most prestigious of his time. The architect Domenico Fontana died in 1607 and could never see his work completely accomplished, which happened after 1843 with Gaetano Genovese. The walls of the Palace were painted by artists like Battistello Caracciolo, Giovanni Balducci and Belisario Corenzio. In 1919, the Royal Palace became the property of the state that opened it to the public and between 1922 and 1923 moved the National Library Vittorio Emanuele III to the first and second floors of the Palace of the Feasts. The Second World War caused some damages, only then repaired in the following years. Moreover  the fall of the monarchy caused the dispersal of some furniture.
