He used literature to change the world, using text to be a political writer. He wanted people to be kinder and to highlight unfair things

He was born in India part of the British Empire. He was born to parents that were civil servants. They strived for him to achieve excellence by giving him a classic upper middle class upbringing. After his rough experince in schools, he turned his back on the English public school system. He never want to University, worked as a book store eventually writing his own.

He is most famous for his novels Animal Farm and 1984. He wanted to highlight the corruption that lies within the leaders of government who have drive or want to destroy anyone who thinks differently. Both of his text got banned from being taught in some schools. 1984 was banned from the Soviet Union until 1988.

Orwell creates a fictional state called Oceania, which is would consist of North and South America, British Isles, Australasia and Southern Africa.  There are two other states that are in the futuristic world both being Eurasia and Eastasia. It is a place where its citizens deal with oppression by it is viewed as freedom. It is used as a way to demonstrate the aspects that are dangerous in a totalitarian government. 

With the book being written in 1949, being over 30 years before the time of the book being 1984, he wanted to use it as a way of serving a warning to his readers. He wanted to make sure that the present of the book would be there for years on end.

There is a shade over the screen to try and achieve a sense of privacy from the people watching us. The art piece is bring awareness to the fact that we don't have as much privacy as we think when we are on the internet. There are things such as  search history or your digital footprint making it so that when you do things online there is a trail. The technology can outsmart you because the carrier can know your location at all times. "Say goodbye to privacy" is just one idea of how techology takes away from our privacy.

Think about it, how does it know when you are going to say "Alexa, whats the weather" if it isn't already listening to what you are saying. Amazon has hired thousands of workers to listen to what people are doing to "improve Alexa's speech understanding". I feel as though those people could be working as testers speaking to the Alexa instead of them listening to people in their homes. 

“We take the security and privacy of our customers’ personal information seriously,” an Amazon spokesman said in an emailed statement. “We only annotate an extremely small sample of Alexa voice recordings in order [to] improve the customer experience."

This quote was taken from the article below. The spokesman is saying that they take the privacy of the users seriously, yet they are invading it for company gain. They go on to say that the information is kept secure but thats the same thing we think when we buy the echo dots. We aren't as free and have as much privacy as we think.

It is showing us how we are being followed and watched, even when you think that you aren't. It explains in the middle the different examples of places that have surveillance like the bus stand or the place of worship. We also see how we give up essential things to get a sense of safety. The line "The great asset of personal freedom a loss in surveillance systems as a whole" means that the if want personal freedom then we have to give up the system that we have now. Though if we give that up, then we will have a different way in life and people might have a problem with that.

Some people think that only people who are doing bad acts need to worry about their privacy and hide what they are doing, but that isn't the case. It matters for everyone because you are partaking in a self-deprecation and making it so that you aren't doing anything "suspicious". There are a bunch of CEOs of big companies such as Google or Facebook saying "privacy is no longer a social norm" Yet they are the same people that will buy a house and then buy the four houses surrounding the house to make sure they have a zone of privacy to make sure people can't monitor. 

Glenn Greenwald is explaining to us that even though there are people that disclaim the importance of our own privacy we understand the importance of it. We are social people hence why we post online but we have things that we want to keep to ourselves. 

When we think we are being watched we start to act differently than they would if they weren't. They make decisions based on what other people's expectations are of them. We live in a state of how we could be watched even though we aren't being watched at all times. The surveillance puts a sense of fear of not being obedient. 
 
Important quote: 
"People can very easily in words claim that they don't value their privacy, but their actions negate the authenticity of that belief". 
I think this is important because it encompasses the idea of how people try to be accepting of the lack of privacy that we have but still try and maintain it.

The film illustrates the idea of how when you are on social media, they control what you see and they keep you coming back. The film shows us what companies do to record what you are interested in and make sure that it keeps popping up on your screen so that you are engaged. 

The question is related to the film because social media is taking away from our privacy and our lives. They are pulling in the audience and making it so that you are stuck in your phone. It takes away from your privacy because you can no longer look up something without it reappearing on your search history. Everything is online tracking your behaviors so you don't have anything that is a secret if you put it online indirectly or not. It shows how much control social media and the internet have because they have made a long documentary about what social media is doing and people still use it, myself included.
