With the light you can create the mood of the scene and you can show to the state of mind and emotion of the character. You can represent what he/she is feeling or show their actions in a more intense way. Looking at the pictures and the gif, the two first ones they are telling a story and the bottom ones are representing the feeling of the character, like the one with the shadows in horizontal it makes the character look like she is trapped, maybe emotionally or in life.
