Robert Parris Moses, also known as Bob Moses, was a Harvard University graduate and a high school math teacher in Harlem. With people of color still being restricted in their right to vote, Blacks kept from voting by white local and state officials through the most common methods of poll taxes and literacy tests. However, many people of color were also restricted through more aggressive methods, such as and beatings and lynching. Therefore, Moses joined the SNCC and began taking part in difficult and dangerous, in order to promote change. After three years of working to improve the state of Mississippi, Moses announced the "Freedom Summer", which was a a largely publicized campaign in Mississippi to register blacks to vote during the summer of 1964. For this campaign. many civil rights white and black volunteers, traveled to Mississippi in order to attempt to end the political disenfranchisement of black people in the state. Through this, Moses was able to bring attention to racially discriminatory government delegation, racial divide in society, and the importance of people of color being offered opportunities. The NACC began creating more opportunities by opening "Freedom Schools" that would address the racial inequalities in Mississippi’s educational system. These schools became a model for future social programs and alternative educational institutions.
