This should be a running module for at least 2 years.
This should include a Matlab beginners and advanced program and especially a Python course. These are essential for engineers and are resources that aren't taught elsewhere in the uni (in Python's case). 
Also, when students even begin to consider (or require) the use of Matlab for projects, they haven't worked with it for 2 years, resulting in a lack of interest in attempting to.

There are also other simulation and CAD software (eg. Fusion 360, Solidworks, Thermocalc, Deform etc.)  which could easily be introduced to students so that they may have a general idea of the role of computation in further research within materials.

Notes are usually more complete, thorough and useful than slides when studying for an exam. Also, they are  faster to consult. 
While students are expected to make their own notes, these can only be as good or thorough as the slides shown.
