Allie was a symbol of his innocence, and when he passed, it greatly affected him. Holden sort of "lost his innocence" when Allie died. I think Holden’s relationship with Jane is the most peculiar of those listed because it is the most mysterious. He states they messed around a bit, and that he feels special about her, but he does not inform us thoroughly of the current state of their connection. In contrast to Holden’s fight with Sally, he and Jane barely talk at all. I think Holden offering to run off with Sally was displacement of his true desire to elope with Jane, diverted because he is afraid to talk to her.
