Riis' intentions were to expose the living conditions of the poor to the middle and upper class, in his book "How the Other Half Lives" , in hopes of getting help. And it worked. He published these photos because he wanted to help the people in poverty. He knew what it was like to live in poverty so he wanted to make a change.
