The first strategy for integrating curriculum into a multicultural education, is to include literature written by women or people of color. This type of literature allows for different perspectives, and discussion on the history of relevance pertaining to the author. A second strategy is to incorporate case studies into subjects such as history, literature, science and social studies. Incorporating real-life experiences, educates and fosters cultural sensitivity and understanding. Third, discussing other cultural perspectives on historical events such as immigration to the New World, Civil War, World War 1 and 2, slavery, and much more. Lastly, incorporating historical figures or stories of diverse cultures into lessons across all subjects.

Culturally Responsive Teaching Methods

A first teaching method, focuses on students and their prior knowledge or culturally related experience to a topic. Allowing students to draw or write on topics, prior to teaching and educating them on it. Second, tailoring lesson plans and instruction to each student's needs is a great method. This includes applying visual, auditory and hands on learning aids during instruction and lesson. A third method includes class engagement and discussion. This discussion allows for different perspectives and ways of thinking to be shared. This method allows every student to have some relatability with another, and to see that it is not just them if they have received the incorrect answer. Lastly, adapting styles such as reading aloud, repeating directions and reading passages, classroom groups, interactive learning games, and more.

Fostering A Multicultural Classroom Environment

The first strategy in having a safe, all inclusive learning environment is to set up classroom rules and a social contract. Setting up rules allows for students to know and understand their teacher's expectations within the classroom. Setting up a social contract, allows for students to voice their concerns, and be heard by their teacher. This establishes a open relationship and respect. In elementary education classrooms, having the alphabet line and number line, include sign language hands and ten frames. This allows students to make hand connections, along with concrete connections to semi-concrete connections in math. Third, providing alternative language suggestions underneath signs throughout the room. Signs include classroom rules, social contract, labels, directions, books and more. Lastly, providing non-verbal hand cues for simple things through out the day. Such as raise one finger for bathroom, two for pencil, three for tissue and so on.

Engagement with Families and Communities

In engaging with parents and the school community, communication is key. A educator can communicate with parents through weekly newsletters discussing learning objectives for the week, after school activities and fundraisers, and offering words of encouragement and kindness. The school principal can provide the same overview newsletter for parents as well. Along with a newsletter, having a online forum for school community outreach, will help in keeping those open lines of communication. Second, encourage involvement with parents. Whether after school events or volunteering. Encourage and answer any questions. Third, allow parent's voices to be heard. Providing anonymous polls on topics such as homework, concerns for the year, positives from last year and this year, so on and so forth. Fourth, resources to support families. Resources such as parent communications and parenting styles, backpack program for lower socioeconomic students, resources for outreach programs in the community, and hygiene things to send home as well. Lastly, parent, teacher committees. These committees allow for both educators and parents to come together to grow the school, provide support to the school community, and to provide education among everyone.
