“Here everything’s like it was in the 1800s, outside it’s — it’s 1996. This sentence by itself raised a lot of questions. (That are answered later on) I think that the author added this to clear up some things, like why they can’t say ok or shut up. Or why Jesse got beat for trying to touch a box in the tree (it was a camera). Overall this was a very important moment.

Quarantine. This is the word that is haunting the village they are living in. Recently everyone has been getting sick with a deadly disease. I think the author included this to show this will be a big part in the book, and that this is when Clifton falls.

“I need you to do something very dangerous.” This is important because this I think will be what the story revolves around. And obviously the author but this in to show this to.

She finds a way out and takes it. She hides in this guys truck and gets out of Clifton. So now Jessie’s got to find the medicine and help the kids of Clifton.

Something that I found interesting about the book was that when she was at the phone she didn’t know what to do. I think her mom could have explained how to use a phone in a little more depth. Since that is a dire part of her job to contact Mr. Neely. This helps the author achieve her purpose by making more suspense on how she might not complete her “mission.”

Something that makes me think is what Tol and Ray’s intentions were. And, whether or not they are central characters or just random background characters. The author might be trying to say that Jessie is more knowledgeable about the 1996 world than is shown.

Something that is weird is that that stream that she tried to drink from is poison and she said that it runs through Clifton. The author might be hinting that the kids who are sick drank from that stream which could be the reason they are sick.

She knows to much, we have to kill her. Mr. Neely said. This is the biggest twist by far! Jessie was looking forward to see him because the town of Clifton is mostly sick and Neely was supposed to help them. I think the author added this so, one, it could stretch out the story, and two it would be kind of anticlimactic if everything ended up the way it was supposed to be.

We ended this reading session with a cliffhanger, Jessie just called the news saying to come to the press conference, Jessie is going to talk about the health issues at Clifton. The author is doing this so there will be a resolution, but I do think something will go wrong.

In the story Jessie was trying to escape from Mr. Neely. Jessie had to climb out a window that was high up in Neely’s building. Jessie was scared to climb out because it was so high up. But Jessie coped with that fear because she was acting like it was a game she used to play back at Clifton. I think the author added this part to show homage to her friends back at Clifton, also to show Jessie misses them in this time of crisis.
