This activity can be conducted in the classroom, with a few simple art supplies!

The wrinkled heart serves as a visual technique to help students understand consequences of bullying. It serves as a popular social-emotional learning tool as well.

To begin, the teacher will cut out hearts, or one big heart, on a piece of paper. They should then ask the students about their experiences, and for things to say that hurt people's feelings. For each negative example given, fold or wrinkle the paper heart.

When the heart is folded, ask the students to name some positive experiences/words of affirmation. As they do this, unfold the heart. Ask the students how the heart looks, and point out that although the heart is now flat, the wrinkles remain (to create the analogy of scars.)

To understand why bullies do what they do, sometimes we need to put ourselves in their shoes. This activity is built for classrooms, for students to act out various roles in a bullying scenario.

The teacher should first introduce the activity by explaining that they will be doing some acting to learn some new skills. They should then set the scene, and break students into groups. One student will play the bully, one the bullied (victim), and one the bystander.

Be sure to explore the situation assigned and how everyone should act, allowing for some improvisation. Role-playing scenario cards can be found online detailing various situations. When the scene is over, take time to reflect on the importance of the students' choices, why they did what they did, and how they could have done something differently (if applicable).

The goal of this role-play is to have the student complete the action and understand various perspectives- so they will be prepared to deal with situations as they come up later in real life.
