Thesis: A reader that loves dark mystery books would love Alice Walker’s “The Flowers,” with the steep twist in theme, the mystery at the resolution, and how readers will be confused at the climax and have to dig deeper.
First body paragraph: A reader that loves dark themes in books will love the steep twist of the theme in the story. The way the story “The Flowers,” includes a dark theme is very sudden, which appeals to many readers. For example, it is very appalling that as “It was then she stepped smack into his eyes. Her heel became lodged in the broken ridge between brow and nose, and she reached down quickly, unafraid, to free herself. It was only when she saw his naked grin that she gave a little yelp of surprise.” (Paragraph 6) This shows the true theme of the story; the world is a dark place and no one can’t do anything about it. Myop has to accept this fact and move on with life before she becomes like the man she found. The steep twist in the theme makes the story so intriguing, which many readers love to read.

I believe that Lather and Nothing Else Is a good read because of the story’s characterization. The better the suspense is in a story the more a reader will be attracted and will like it more when all the suspense is dropped. For example, the suspense is built up when Captain Torres sits in the barber chair and the barber starts cutting Captain Torres hair. This shows excitement to the reader because they don't know if he is going to kill him or not or if he is scared to kill him. Clearly, the suspense in a story and how it is released is an eye catcher especially for middle school students.

This type of figurative language typically used for humorous or emphatic effect, usually makes readers laugh. For instance, it is amusing how Captain Torres states, “They told me you would kill me. I came to find out if it was true. But it’s not easy to kill. I know what I’m talking about.” (Last line of the Story) This shows humor because the Captain knew that the barber was part of the rebellion yet he still went for a shave.

Body Paragraph: The Imagery in this story will give the readers a clear thought of what it is like to be in the story. This type of figurative language is known to describe in great detail how stuff goes on in the story so the readers get a clear idea of what happens. For example, in the sentence, “the rifle clattered to the roof” (line 39) it shows good detail on how the rifle fell to the roof. This shows great detail because it describes how the rifle fell. If it didn’t have imagery, the sentence would be like, “the rifle fell to the roof”.
Thesis: “A Sound of Thunder” is phenomenal read for the middle school audience because of the constant action and relatable personalities that multiple characters have, along with the struggles they have throughout the story.

Many characters in this story have unique structures about themselves that middle school students can relate to very well, which is complimentary. The type of writing of the story compliments the characters through the actions and reactions that they present in the story. On page 234, the words that Travis uses to downgrade Eckels when he steps off the path open ups an opportunity for the reader to conclude the personality of both characters through the words that Travis uses along with the reaction of Eckels, (“How do we know?” cried Travis. “We don't know anything! It's all a mystery! Get out of here, Eckles!” Eckels Fumbled his shirt. ) This shows that Travis can be bitter at times, but also shows that Eckles can be a fragile person when he does something wrong. Some of the audience may be able to relate to this event because of the relatable personality they may have with rather Travis or Eckles. Consequently, this element alone can attract many students because the story can be more enjoyable when the audience can relate to the characters.

The rising actions is going to make the reader curious and interested in the story. For example, on page two captain torres said “I would love to catch a nap,” he said, “but there’s a lot to be done this evening.”I lifted the brush and asked, with pretended indifference: “A firing party?”“Something of the sort,” he replied, “but slower.”“All of them?”“No, just a few.” This demonstrates how the barber and the reader is left clueless as to what captain torres is doing after the cut. As you can see the rising actions in this story all the most interesting parts of the story, especially to middle school students.
