Rudolf Dreikur's theory of giving logical consequences resonated with me. I feel that sometimes we do not realise our actions towards disciplining a child. We might punish the child without even meaning too. Learning about Rudolf's theory made me reflect that I should pay more attention on how I respond to my student's behaviour and the kind of consequences that I should impose. I should spend some time to think through the kind of logical consequences that would benefit my students out of that situation and at the same time treat them with respect and dignity to maintain a positive classroom culture.

I think today’s Aha moment for me is thinking back to what teachers i have encountered over the years. When i heard about the example of hostile teacher, i got reminded of the teachers i had in the past who would scold and throw things just because they got angry at a student.

As a teacher myself now, today’s presentation and the module in general also made me reflect back on what teacher i am and what teacher do i aspire to be. I do admit that at times, our emotions do get the better of us, but this does not solve anything.

I really resonate with Ginnot’s theory on how we as teacher’s should approach situations calmly instead of confrontationally. I’ve learn that importantly we should never take it personal with our students, hang our ego at the door and that everyday is a new day. I hope that i will be able to be the teacher my student needs. I also hope that i will be able to use whatever that i’ve learn to good use when i’m back in school.

My Aha moment is the motivation that I got after knowing the path that US president-elect, Joe Biden went through since young. From someone that can not even say his own name properly till dealing with reporter, media and other.
Whatever we observed is just the behaviour, We, as an educator, need to understand the cause of the behaviour and address it. To understand the causes, we need to build student-teacher relationship. To have good teacher- student relationship we need to apply different foundational theories based on the situation that we are in. The 'I' message is very powerful and I will use it in everyday life. 'Best teacher help students build their own self-esteem and trust their experience'. This quote can be apply to parent with their children. Finishing NED 110 is just the begin of the journey!

One takeaway that from the presentations from the groups in this two weeks, the basis of each theory presented are similar and based on other fundamental theorists such as Skinner. How each theory can be an extension of other foundational theories. During the presentation, I also started to reflect back on my time as a student and tried to recall if any of my Teachers had used methods from the theories that we have learnt in lecture.

There were some that I can resonate to such as discipline. I feel these theories are very important but the application of these theories are equally important as well. It did made me reflect what kind of educator I want to be and what my expectations will be as well.

Colorosso theory on inner discipline reasonates me the most. It is a reminder to be the backbone teacher. Inner discipline is not about giving punishment or rewards. It includes showing, giving ownership of the problem, guiding the child and ensuring dignity is not compromised. This is similar to the theory on discipline with dignity. Sometimes, without us realising, when disciplining a child, we indirectly attack the child’s dignity. I hope to try out some strategies that the groups have shared.

As I reflect on my role as a special needs educator, my Aha moment for today's session is how I could use assertive discipline more effectively and efficiently in my classroom. While I acknowledge the benefits of using a token economy system and the importance of individualising it to cater to the diverse needs of my students, I have learned to embed the three principles of "catching students being good", "consequences of breaking the rules" and being an assertive teacher" into the token economy. I think it is important for educators to be consistent in and learn to strike a balance between rewarding and disciplining students without hurting their dignity. Too much of rewards or discipline will do more harm than good. This ties in with Dreiker's model of structuring logical consequences using the three R's of related, respectful and reasonable as well as a big E of empathy.

I believe that guiding and allowing the child to have the ownership of the problem, finding ways to resolve situation will help the child grow their inner discipline. We need to empower children and not always spoon feed them.

My AHA moment would be on the presentation of the 6 theorists. It made me reflect on what I used to be as an educator, being guilty of some of the negatives, to now what I am supposed to be in the future. I hope to bring all that I’ve learnt and put into practice when I become my journey next year!

My final takeaway: Throughout the 13 weeks, we have learned may theories and strategies but most importantly, in my opinion, we must be able to apply and put all those that we have learned to good use, in our classroom and with the students if not all these will just merely be theories and text from the textbooks.

The theory that resonate with me will be Wattenberg’s reality appraisal. This is because sometimes our students misbehave just to get our attention or their friends’ attention or for the fun of it and they do not see how their actions can actually affect another person or the class or even their parents. Therefore, as educators we need to step in as the ‘3rd party’ and bring them to understand how their actions can affect the rest and themselves. I believe that by strengthening their ability to see the consequences of their actions can help our students develop the values needed to manage their own behaviour.

I understand that it is important to provide logical consequences rather than punishment. By providing logical consequences, the students would understand the reason for what they did was wrong.

NED110 covered many theories and strategies which I can implement when I return back to work. My positive aha moment was during Group 4 presentation of Supportive Approaches on Consequences. I had been using both natural and logical consequences on my students. Both consequences got its benefits and it ultimately depends on the student’s profile to know which of the two to use. There should be visual supports provided if using logical consequences to students with ASD as they might not be able to grasp what they might have done wrong.

Thomas Gordon’s Discipline as Self-Control resonated with me the most. I liked the concept of using I-messages. As I have been using You-messages all the time, which focuses at the students and prevents them from improving their inappropriate behaviours. By using more I-messages, I can express how I feel about their behaviours and how it affects them in their learning and growth.

It makes her understand what is wrong at the situation and she tries to correct it.
For Tomlinson, I have using DI for the many years.. As I was teaching at risk students in my sch.. As a male AED, somehow the naughtier, older students were always pushed to me and I have had to deal with alot of these extreme misbehaviours. By applying the strategies from the lessons from Gordon and DWD, I think I am able to cope and make a better impact on these students, with a more structured and evident based approach.

Learning different theories has brought both enlightenment and given me deeper insights into the mindset and behaviour of our students. With the benefit of hindsight, I also see how many things I have done in the past could have been done differently. My Aha moment is realising that at the end of 13 sessions, I have come a full circle to the thought that impacted me in the first session - 'Kids before content, Love before all' (Sean McComb, Teacher of the Year). It is true that we remember teachers for how they have made us feel, not so much what they have taught...and as proven from the sharing today, some of these 'memories' can have a lasting impact on us. Perhaps this is why my favourite Theorist has got to be Haim Ginott. I will go forth and learn to embrace every day and the diversity of needs and challenges represented by the students I meet.

With more in depth and explicitly explaining about the different theories, we gained better understanding on how we can apply them in the time to come. It is applicable in all kind of situations and also applicable to the students that we are going to support who needs extra support for their learning. This also makes me decide of what kind of strategies and scaffolding techniques that I would like to use in a different settings and to different SEN students.

If I could name a theory that resonated to me, it will be about constructivism theory. Active learning is a key part of the constructivism. If the materials are useful and beneficial to them, they will be likely to master it. Conversely, if the materials are irrelevant, they will be likely not going to learn it. Student should actively understand the learning materials rather than passively absorbing and memorizing it. The students should be able to construct their own understanding and building on what the student already knows. They make connections between new information and old information. As an educator, I should not just disseminate knowledge to students and students are like empty “vessel” receives it. Instead, I ask deep questions and give challenging problems to encourage them to analyze, discuss and brainstorm to find the answers or solutions. This helps them to construct new knowledge and skills by building on current knowledge and skills.

Through all the educational theories I have learnt in this module, there is no single or perfect learning theory that applies to every student. The typical classroom has myriads of learners who have different experiences, needs and learning styles. Teaching and learning methodologies must be constantly revised, changed, and modified. Therefore, different learning theories should be utilized to accommodate a variety of learner, to create an environment that will be beneficial to the teacher the learners.

I think Dreikurs model resonated with me as a SST. Thinking back, I am guilty of praising my students all the time. I praised them for their efforts and achievements, but Dreikurs model have taught me that there is a difference between encouragement and praise, and that these 2 approaches yield different behaviours/results. With regard to the implementation of logical consequences, I actually find myself not practicing this all the time. There were times I wasn’t conscious about the consequences that I gave. Furthermore, providing a democratic classroom environment has always been one of my priorities as an educator. It can get challenging at times considering that my students require differentiated instructions.

My final AHA moment was a reflection on “why I chose to be a teacher in the first place?” There were moments I got tired managing behaviours in a class and there were moments I struggled to remain calm in situations that could trigger my negative emotions. But despite all these, I find myself ending each day with a sense of fulfilment. Fulfilling because I taught my students something new today. Fulfilling because I learnt something different or new about my students everyday. Fulfilling because I got to hear my students’ laughter and see them smile. Fulfilling because I am working in an environment where every adult is moving towards the same goal, which is to push our students to their full potential. And fulfilling because I got to learn more about myself. As I have shared at the beginning of this course, learning is a lifelong journey. As a teacher, I strive to lead my life with a growth mindset. Because I am always learning, everyday is fulfilling for me. (: #teachersforthewin

The classroom management model that resonated most with me is Coloroso's Inner Discipline Model. Very often, I would rely on rewards and consequences to motivate my students in displaying the expected behaviour. In the heat of the situation, when a student performs a misbehaviour or an inappropriate behaviour, a consequence would be given after warning the child with an 'oh dear'. Through the research and learning about Inner Discipline, I realised that providing students with consequences does not effectively resolve the problem. Furthermore, my students (mostly around 7 to 9 years old) would not understand the severity and/or impact of their misbehaviour. As such, these behaviours would tend to repeat itself. With Inner Discipline, the focus is really on guiding students to understand where they have gone wrong, and as opposed to giving them a punishment or consequence, I should be guiding them to take charge of their own problem.

Overall, I had really enjoyed my learning in this course as every session brings about new insights and thoughts on how I can improve myself in my practices and my role as the teacher. Our actions and words have a profound impact on children, and it is essential to be aware and conscious of how we portray ourselves and how we treat and interact with the students in our class.

Most of the theorists presented are well explore and explain. Especially in one of the learning theory on behaviorism, suggests that the learner is a blank slate and that all human behavior can be caused or explained by external stimuli. No two students are alike, and the way every person learns will vary.

As LBS i will need to at least understand some if not all educational theories and use these different techniques to assist students in their classroom or individually according to different kinds of learning, at the same time to help all kinds of students to find success in learning.

The theorists that resonated with me the most was Lee & Marlene Canter. (Surprise!) I was a true believer in assertive discipline when I was part of the discipline comm back in the day. I had no choice - I am 5footalmostnothing and I was given charge of 16/17 year old Sec 5 students! However, thoughout my 10 years of being an AED T&L, I adopted, changed my approaches with the students. I had an AHA moment when I realised that hey! I shifted my approach in discipline to Ginott's model, where I-msgs were changed to be more positive and not demeaning, I was their role model and set examples for the students. I still maintained my Fred Jones' belief of using body language as a key way of getting the students on task. I could just stand right in front of the class, in silence and the class would be so quiet you could hear a pin drop (true story!). Going back to Ginott, I made sure that clear instructions were given (and written) on the board so that the students knew what to expect of, from, their learning. It is really very interesting to be studying these theorists and finally putting a name behind the types that I have subconsciously used and adapted to my own classroom ways. In future, I may even explore other theorists since I will be embarking on this new journey with even more different profiles of students.

All of the theories covered these 2 weeks have been really insightful as they all revolve around the theme of discipline. I realized that after listening to all 6 theories, there are some overlaps and that each of the 6 theories covers up each others' weaknesses. Therefore, as an educator, it is very important for me to apply more than 1 theory in my teaching and disciplining of my students as different students have different needs, rather than just relying on 1 theory.

Through this course, I’ve learnt many different theories and I couldn’t exactly pin point one that resonate most with me as each theorist have some components that speaks to me. Perhaps Kounin’s theory is one that I would like to apply in my future teaching as the theory focuses on preventative discipline; preventing a misbehaviour even before it happens. It takes many practice and experience to master this theory to deliver an effective lesson management; teaching while maintaining good classroom management. I believe that prevention is better than correction, however in sped and mainstream classrooms, situations varies and the strategies from other theories will then be applied to correct a behaviour when needed.

Overall, I’ve learnt to reflect on my past actions and understand more on the rationale behind each theories, application of the theories and understanding that these theories may not always work on all situations. We have to learn to utilise the different theories for different situations, change or combine a few theories together to create a more conducive and effective classroom management.
