Adult learners are different from child learners and therefore need to be taught differently. This struck a chord with me because I was surprised by the different approaches that needed to be taken. Also, I could relate with many of the suggestions and principles as I could see why I didn't like and liked the various professional development I've been a part of.

Just like we do for adult learners, I need to make sure that I tell my students the PURPOSE behind the things we are learning. This is in hopes of connecting their learning to real-life situations and making learning relevant to them. Also, to get my students more invested, engaged, and motivated, I need to find out what will enhance their intrinsic motivation. I plan on having a survey and conferencing with students to see what motivates them to learn and do their best.

All 5 suggestions were a hit for me. I never thought about building a tech team within the school to help alleviate stress, but also to help support new and old learners! Also, just as it is important that educators scaffold tasks for students, it is just as important to make sure we scaffold for other teachers! We need to meet them where they are at!

DTTP - Motivation

I learned a lot from Daniel Pink and his theories on motivation. To motivate my learners, I want to provide some sort of autonomy in the form of free time. Knowing how busy teachers can be and how time consuming trainings can be, I plan on giving teachers an allotted amount of time to have them choose what they will be doing. They have a choice of asking me questions, playing around with different programs we talked about, or creating something they can use in the classroom using the tools provided. These will be compiled into a folder so that everyone can see and use what other classmates have made in hopes that the contribution will be a motivating factor.

In my DTTP, I plan on utilizing Knowles' principles of adult learning so that I may be able to reach and teach adults in a more meaningful way. My training must have a purpose so participants know why it is important and worth giving up their time for. Also, I will tailor it to build on something they are doing in the classroom whether it be the academic piece or the technology piece so they are somewhat familiar. In the training, I will give them time to choose what they feel they need more emphasis on (questions, software, creating materials) and make sure that the training equips them with things they can use and do right away. Providing models, end-products, and having them share their creations with the class will hopefully boost the intrinsic motivation for students to put forth their time, effort, and interest!
