After a music lesson, I told a student that they were very focused during the lesson. After I said that, the student responded with, "No one has ever called me focused before," and hugged me.

So far, my most favorite moment has been seeing how building relationships and trust with the students and their families has been paying off. I am a social worker so having that strong foundation ensures trust with our families which I feel is so important! Seeing my students and their parents/guardians trusting you has been rewarding.

When I was a student, there was time that both my parents and school collided and I felt like everyone was working together I felt like I was important and noticed and did not fall into the background.

I have a calendar with personal life and school life obligations and tasks. Keeping track of student progress has also helped me align instruction with what the students need the most help with.

I stayed after for extra help past when I was required to, and wound up an hour late for a happy hour with my friends.

I definitely had conflicting feelings of doing unpaid work and missing destressing time, but ultimately I will get back that social time and the students have multiplied the extra hour I gave across themselves and benefitted from it, so I feel good about it in retrospect.

I live in Freeport so lots of times I will see some of my students or former students at a store or at the recreation center ( I also work there in the summers so I see lots of my students!)

Sometimes I feel like after talking with parents, I don't actually see improvements in students' behavior, despite them saying they will speak with them at home. Or the improvements only seem to be temporary. Wondering how to improve that dilemma.

I've been trying my best recently to improve my Spanish ability. So when students came in to translate for Parent-Teacher conferences, I would make an effort to use the Spanish I could when it was relevant to speak to them directly. They really seemed to appreciate it and I think it made some of them more comfortable to try speaking to me in English after I spoke (very poorly) to them in their native language. I am looking forward to improving more and speaking to them again later in the year.

It's nice and also a satisfying moment when you have a parent attend a Parent Teacher Conference and you get to tell them how much they are progressing in their musical abilities and studies. In addition, you can connect more with the families by outlining all of the upcoming performances and events your ensembles will be performing in throughout the district.

For some families, I can not get any contact from a phone call, email, or Parent Square. If the student is not trying to pass the class, and I can not reach the guardians, what options do I have without seeming antagonistic?

Some concerns I have are making sure that my concerns come across well. At the end of the day, we are taking care of these families' babies and they may be adverse to hearing that their child isn't meeting certain grade level expectations. sometimes I am concerned when my students parents are not responsive any time I try to make contact with them. I am not sure if this is because they are not on parentsquare but I have also written notes and put them in the students folders but still won't receive anything back. I'm not sure what else I can try.
