The fact that it can just mean someone is unaware of a situation and they may say the wrong thing but they learn and grow from the experience meaning they were ignorant in the moment. It can also mean that someone is willfully ignorant. They don't wish to grow or change from the experience and they keep their ignorance and spread it as a belief. I believe ignorance is often connected to racism just as well as things like homophobia and xenophobia.
