"Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky." When Elie first arrived in the camp Auschwhz he saw men, woman, and children getting burned alive. Elie and everyone were in disbelief when they saw this at the camp worrying about their future. Here He is—He is hanging here on this gallows. . . .” This passage occurs at the end of the fourth section, as Eliezer witnesses the agonizingly slow death of the Dutch Oberkapo's pipel, a young boy hanged for collaborating against the Nazis." During one hanging, Elie and the other prisoners cried. They were hanging a young boy and two others but they did not die instantly they were still alive while suffering while everyone was watching.

"And I was glad that Rabbi Eliahou should continue to look for his beloved son.
