Subsidiary Diploma 2nd years group F by Adele

Assignment 3 task
Think about your own life – be honest! But only share what you are happy to talk about in the group.
Have you been stereotyped by others? How?
Do you label certain people? Who? Why?
Do you stereotype – group people together because of a shared characteristic? Who why?
What views do you have of older people? Why?
Do you swear in public, do you mind people swearing? Why is this?
Examples from college life, placements, part time jobs, family, any others.

Worked for a bank in my 20-30's. Was progressing nicely up the career ladder. Came back off maternity leave, had a chat with line manager who said " so Adele, now you have children, you won't be wanting to keep your grade and be a mortgage adviser will you?" I felt that he was pre-judging my intentions and stereotyping me as a mother, with no career aspirations! I was very annoyed!!

I've been stereotyped before as being unintelligent and a rude person simply because I wear facial piercings.
I don't feel like I view things negatively. In terms of elderly people, I think they're often wonderful but misunderstood and stigmatised; I actually volunteer and visit an elderly woman for hours every week to keep her socially active.
I do swear in public amongst people I know are comfortable with it, but will not if someone doesn't like it or it is a more formal situation... Swearing is like salt & pepper for my sentences I think! I'm comfortable with it as it doesn't really mean anything often times.

Stereotypes for mental illness and the school I went to

I was stereotyped as a 'boring nerd' because I was in top set science and English at a Grammar School, therefore I was always seen as someone to not be friends with. I was also stereotyped as a 'crazy emo' because I had mental health problems, had self-injured and listened to different music to my peers. I think I have unintentionally stereotyped people before, such as thinking that slim girls are mean, but this was probably just my experience from being called 'fat' all my life.
I really like older people, I enjoy talking to them as they have interesting stories to tell, however, I do not talk to older people I don't know that often as sometimes they look at me like I'm just a stupid teenager.
I do swear in public, and I think it is acceptable as long it isn't aimed at anyone, if someone does something by accident and swears then it's okay, and also, if people didn't swear in public, then people with illnesses such as Touretes Syndrome, may be more easily stigmatised as they will be the only people swearing in public. (Just an example)

I generally stereotype people by the way they look and dress. For example, if I see a group of boys wearing track suits and playing loud music I would stereotype them as people who often cause argument/trouble. Most of the elderly seem to come across as generally kind and helpful people however there are some who are quite rude. Personally I wouldn't tolerate swearing in front of younger people however it seems quite common in our age group.

I feel like I have been stereotyped in the past due to my hair colour people would say oh she's blonde, she's dumb- even though I was in top set for everything in high school. It was frustrating. However I feel like I silently stereotype and judge people without meaning to whether it be on how they look, what clothes they wear and how they speak to others. For example if somebody doesn't speak properly or use a lot of slang I instantly think; chav, wasn't brought up well. Which is wrong but everybody must do it
