         <description><![CDATA[<div>Palmyra was an ancient city close to current-day Damascus which has artifacts that date back to the Neolithic period. Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. This archeological site evidences part of Damascus rich history from being a Roman to an Ottoman city.</div>]]></description>

I chose this image because it showcases the dynamism of Istanbul, which was first Byznatium and then Constantinople. </div>]]></description>

I chose this monument because it contains so many of the characteristics of traditional Islamic architecture such as the narrow entrance corridor and the use of minimalist water features.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lepanto is famous for the battle between the Holy League and the Ottoman-Habsburg Empire. This was a naval battle which is why I chose the image of the Lepanto Harbor. The battle was won by the Holy League and therefore halted the westward expansion of the Ottoman-Habsburg Empire. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The image shows some boats surrounded by sea snot which is a substance caused by phytoplankton. In recent years, there has been a rise in Sea Snot in the Sea of Marmara because of the chemical fertilizers that have been poured into the sea. I chose this image to show how such a beautiful natural space can be ruined by human activity.</div>]]></description>

The Caspian Sea has been an important geopolitical area since the time of the Ottomans. Today, that geopolitical importance continues because of the oil available in the Caspian Sea. </div>]]></description>

The river is an important player in Indias economy while also serving as a holy place for Hinduism. This picture shows a pilgrimage at the Ganges River. I chose this piece of the Danube because it has been harmed extensively in the past couple of decades. For this reason, the UNESCO adopted it as a heritage site to protect it from further damage. </div>]]></description>
