During that time the moon goes through 8 phases. During this time on a full moon, the moon passes directly in earth's shadow the inner shadow is called the umbra and the outer shadow is the penumbra. A total solar eclipse happens about 2-4 times per year but the reason behind why it seems so rare is because it only covers about 50 miles of land each time it occurs, the inner shadow is called the umbra and the outer shadow is called the penumbra. Spring tides are the largest low and high tides. This occurs when the moon is either in the full or new moon phase, and due to this the sun and moons gravitational pull work together and have a higher gravitational force. Neap tides on the other hand are the exact opposite.
