Hi! My name is Danielle Mari A. Evangelista, but you may call me 'Danni', or 'Elle'. I am a 4th year BS Psychology student. I was born on November 01, 2002, on a Friday in Cagayan de Oro City. I am a middle-child among three, my older sister and my younger brother. I like to interest myself in music, reading, sleeping, watching movies, and writing. Taking psychology was not my first choice because I was planning to take Pharmacy in UP Manila, but that did not happen so I chose Psychology last-minute. An opportunity arose and my parents asked me if I still wanted to continue in that path. By then, I had already loved Psychology so I chose to remain. Looking back to the time before I entered college, I would receive compliments and encouragements about how good I am with people and how they are amazed how easily I can relate to different types of people. I realized then that this is what I was made to do and I enjoy it with all my heart.

For my Philippine Popular Culture interests, I selected 5 from my very long list. To start it off, currently, one of my favorite songs is Dilaw by Maki, who was recently just famous for his bright and fun songs that make me dance in my room. Next is one of my top 3 favorite Filipino desserts, Mais con Yelo. Most people find the taste and texture weird because corn and vanilla ice-cream together seems like a weird combination along with some cornflakes, but somehow it all works together on my tastebuds. Following the dessert, there is a picture of my favorite fashion trends now, which is the modern Filipiñiana. I love how it looks more adapt to today's fashion style, but still keeps the traditional style, which for me is a nice thought as to pay respect to the original style made many, many years ago. Now going to the further left, we have the Tuna Festival in General Santos City. I would say I am biased since I am a 'General', but I do enjoy our local festival, celebrating our title as the "Tuna Capital of the Philippines". The beautiful costumes and floats parading around GenSan are what excite me the most. The last would be a picture of Philip Te Hernandez, who is most commonly known as "Davao Conyo". He is an Instagram and TikTok influencer and comedian who creates short comedic videos or drama related to the everyday life of Filipino people. I love and enjoy his videos for the humor as well as the content he puts up. When I find myself bored, I go to his accounts and watch his reels for laughs.

Music, being one of the things I cannot live without, is what I chose to feature. The evolution of Filipino music from the early years to the types of music being produced by our music industry today is very evident. Music of the late 90s have been the most familiar to me besides the modern music. I have observed that during those years, Pinoy Rock was the most prominent genre of music during that time. Bands like Parokya ni Edgar and Rivermaya were hits and famous everywhere in the Philippines. People knew the lyrics to their songs and would sing along. There were also single artists such as Gary Valenciano and Regine Velasquez who were renowned for their big and beautiful vocals. Now, if we look into modern music, names like Ben&Ben, Zack Tabudlo, and Denise Julia would come up in playlists. Their music sound more advanced with all the technology they use.

Uses and Gratification Theory

The idea behind the Uses and Gratification Theory is the understanding of how people choose the kind of media they consume and the needs they want to satisfy. Music is a very versatile form of art. It can relate to almost every experience an individual can have in his/her life. Looking at the modern society, everybody has their preferences for the music they play or listen to and this is because it depends on what need they have for it, or what they want to satisfy in themselves. In this section, I will be presenting the different reasons why people choose music as their way to gratify whatever need is currently at the top of their list.

The first use they have for music is emotional gratification. Music has a way of relating to whatever emotion a person has. If they are angry, sad, happy, in love, anxious, there are songs made by multiple artists revolving around those very emotions. Songs have a way of amplifying and validating what we feel while we listen to it. The second use is because it helps people sleep well. According to an article by Howard (2023) "Is listening to music better than a sleeping pill?", a research was done to study this and they found out that music is an "effective, inexpensive, and safe method for treating insomnia". It can also satisfy the need to escape from reality. Songs are like storybooks but with a tune and a beat. Every song carries a "plot" or storyline about someone's experience of heartbreak, love, regret, magic, and so many others and so by listening to music that carries those interests, people are inclined to it. Music can also be a way of expressing oneself. There is a quote by an anonymous writer, they said, "You learn a lot about people when you listen to the songs that mean something to them". We can be known by the kind of music we listen to because we become attracted to what we can relate to, so if a person listens to bright and cheery songs all the time, it can be quite safe to assume based on their behaviors as well, that they are most likely to be a happy person. The same idea can be applied to a person who listens to sad songs all the time.
