The government can discourage Singaporeans from owning a car by increasing the price of the car and fuel. Singaporeans will feel that they are not able to afford it and use public transport instead. For example,The duty for premium grade (98-octane and above) petrol was raised by 15 cents a litre to 79 cents a litre, while the duty for intermediate grade (92-octane and 95-octane) petrol was raised by 10 cents a litre to 66 cents a litre. Therefore, Singaporeans will feel that owning a car is too expensive for them and will not buy it as a result.

The Singapore government can discourage Singaporeans from owning cars by greatly increasing the prices of owning cars. An increase in the price of cars put more stress on the finances of those thinking of purchasing a car and hence deter them from deciding to buy one. Additionally, the government can increase the price of car fuel, and since people who own cars often have to refuel their cars regularly, the increase in price of fuel would discourage car ownership as they would have to spend a greater sum of money each time they refuel. Also, the government can increase the price of the ERP(Electronic Road Pricing) to discourage car ownership. If the price of ERP is increased, people who drive cars would have to spend more money whenever they travel to places using their cars. As such, people would be more inclined to choose public transport as their mode of transport as it would be more cost-efficient for them in the long run. Lastly, the government could intentionally make it more troublesome and difficult for people in Singapore to obtain a car ownership license. This would result in less people deciding to own cars has they would prefer convienience for themselves.

The Singapore government can discourage Singaporeans from owning a car by decreasing the number of parking lots/spaces in Singapore. Through this method, Singaporeans will struggle to find slots and areas to legally park their car without getting fined. Consequently, Singaporeans will be frustrated and find it more inconvenient to drive their vehicles around Singapore. Additionally, Singaporeans will find walking to their destination less of a hassle as their money and time will not wasted. And thus, lesser people will own cars.
Another way the government can discourage Singaporeans from owning a car is to increase the price of gas and parking.

The government can discourage car ownership by educating the public on the benefits of using public transport. The benefits include increased environmental friendliness, less competition for parking space, as well as helping bus drivers collect a higher income. They can also increase parking fees as well as the price of owning a car. This will discourage people from owning cars as it is more expensive and would prove more convenient to take other means of transport.

The government can discourage Singaporeans from owning a car by increasing the price of car ownership. Making the price of owning a car more expensive, many Singaporeans may not wish to own a car as they may be unwilling to pay such a high cost, especially for long-term use. Thus, increasing the price can deter Singaporeans from owning a car due to some who are not willing to pay such a high cost for a car.

However, due to the limited land supply, increasing the amount of cars on the road, will cause a lot of traffic congestion. For instance, the government organised by the LTA

The government can discourage the ownership of private-cars, by gradually increasing the cost and inconvenience to own a private-car. This can be done by reducing the capacity of carparks and increasing the cost of patrol. Meanwhile, other modes of transportation, such as public transportation and shared electric cars should be encouraged, made easily accessible and very affordable. This will help Singaporeans to reduce their over-reliance on private-cars to get to their destinations, reducing the number of cars on the road.
