         <description><![CDATA[<p>Kenya has one of the largest HIV epidemics in the world, with an estimated 1.4 million people living with HIV as of 2023, representing an adult prevalence rate of 4.2% (UNAIDS, 2023). While this shows a decline from previous years, the burden remains substantial, especially in high-risk groups such as sex workers, men who have sex with men (MSM), and people who inject drugs (PWID), where prevalence rates can exceed 20%.</p><p>Additionally, young women aged 15-24 are disproportionately affected, with infection rates nearly twice as high as their male counterparts. This disparity is driven by gender inequality, sexual violence, and inadequate access to comprehensive sex education.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>HIV/AIDS places a tremendous strain on Kenya’s already burdened healthcare system. The demand for antiretroviral therapy (ART), counseling, and support services adds significant pressure, particularly in rural areas where healthcare facilities are often inadequate. This lack of infrastructure can lead to interruptions in treatment, increasing the risk of drug resistance and further transmission.</p><p>The economic impact of HIV/AIDS is substantial. Over 15% of Kenya’s national health budget is allocated to HIV-related services, highlighting the heavy burden on the healthcare system. The country relies heavily on international aid programs like PEPFAR and the Global Fund to cover treatment costs, underscoring the fragility of the system. A reduction in external funding could severely disrupt ART coverage, leading to higher transmission rates and increased mortality.</p><p>Beyond healthcare costs, HIV/AIDS has broader economic repercussions due to lost productivity. Infected individuals often face reduced ability to work, which not only affects their livelihoods but also places additional strain on families and the overall economy. The loss of income can deepen poverty, especially in already vulnerable communities, creating a cycle of socio-economic hardship that exacerbates the spread and impact of the virus.</p>]]></description>

         <title>4. Women, Children, and Mother-to-Child Transmission (MTCT)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Women and children are particularly vulnerable to HIV in Kenya, often due to social and economic inequalities. Young women between the ages of 15-24 are disproportionately affected, and many new infections occur in this group. Addressing gender inequality and improving access to education and healthcare for women and girls are critical steps.</p><p>Mother-to-child transmission remains a significant issue, despite advancements in Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) programs. Approximately 10,000 children are born with HIV annually in Kenya. This challenge is particularly pronounced in rural and remote regions, where many pregnant women either lack access to or do not adhere to antiretroviral therapy (ART), increasing the risk of transmission to newborns.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>In addition to focusing on the existing allocation of medical resources and education, socio-economic inequality exacerbates the spread of HIV. For example, people living in poor and rural areas often face more difficulty accessing HIV prevention, testing, and treatment resources.</p><p>Although treatment and preventive measures are very important, the role of mental health and social support in the rehabilitation of HIV patients should be emphasized. Mental health support can reduce patients' depression, anxiety, and other mental stress, thus improving their willingness to persist in treatment.</p>]]></description>
