         <description><![CDATA[<div>BASED ON a true story, LORENZO’S OIL tells about Lorenzo Odone, a 9-year-old boy who is struck down by a rare disease called Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), which causes degeneration of the brain. ALD is a genetic disorder carried down from mother to male offspring. Because of ALD, Lorenzo does not have the ability to produce a certain enzyme that keeps fat from building up in his blood. Consequently, Lorenzo degenerates from a healthy, active boy into a withered, frail, hairless child who can’t walk, talk, swallow, or see, and he suffers from seizures that cause him to tremble, scream and choke. His faithful and determined parents Augusto (Nick Nolte) and Michaela (Susan Sarandon) Odone begin conducting their own research. The couple discover an antidote, a medicinal oil. When Lorenzo adds this oil to his diet, it stabilizes the fat in his blood. By 14, he is able to see and communicate with simple sounds. The oil is coined LORENZO’S OIL and is now given to boys suffering from ALD.</div>]]></description>
