The summary of this passage is that, to the boy, the father was the best person on Earth; he said how nice and polite the father was, how he was very smart and knew everything, and always looks on the bright side of things, along with random details.

Significant passages:
- "Whenever the boy knocked on his door his father would look up and smile and put down whatever it was he was doing." (Otsuka, 62)
- "You don't have to worry about kitty McKenzie anymore. She's in a better place now. She's up there in heaven. I heard they threw her a big party the day she arrived." (Otsuka, 62)

Analysis:
Throughout reading these passages, the boy clearly loves his father and thinks very highly of him. Because of this, we can infer that the son thinks it was wrong for the American's to take away his nice, loving father, especially for not doing anything wrong. This could be evidence to why the boy whispers "Hirohito" by the guard towers.

The summary of this passage is that the black Oxford shoes, which were worn by the boy's father, is a reminder to the boy of his father, but the realization his father is gone.

Significant passages:
- "The shoes were black Oxfords. Men's, size eight and a half, extra narrow. He took them out of his suitcase and slipped them over his hands and pressed his fingers into the smooth oval depressions left behind by his father's toes and then closed his eyes and sniffed the tips of his fingers."
- "Tonight they smelled like nothing."
- "Same moon," he whispered to himself, "same moon."

Analysis:
This shows how much the boy misses his father and wishes him back by saying same moon, same moon- but his father is gone because his scent is gone from his shoes.

The summary of this passage is that the boy cant stop thinking about his father and is often thinking about him.

Significant passages:
- "He'd oped the door and he would see his father standing there in his white flannel bathrobe all covered with dust. "It's a long walk from Lordsburg," his father would say. Then they would shake hands, or maybe they'd even hug."
- "Papa," he'd say. "What is it?" "You forgot to put on your shoes." His father would look down at his feet and he'd shake his head with surprise. "Son of a gun," He'd say. "Would you look at that." Then he'd just shrug. He'd lean back on the cot and make himself comfortable."

Analysis:
These quotes show how much the boy thinks about his father, and how much he wants to see him and be with him again, but there's something off. The father forgot to put on his shoes, which seems odd because earlier in the book, the father seemed to be a very neat person who would never forget something like forgetting to put on his shoes; this possibly symbolizes that even the memories of how his father acted like were beginning to leave him as well.
