The movie shows us when the happy ending isn't the greatest thing!  Set in the 1980s Gwangju Democracy Movement, "Youth of May " tells the story of medical student Hwang Hee-tae and nurse Kim Myung-hee, they meet and fall in love seems to be arranged by fate. Hee-tae is Gwangju's pride when he passed the valedictorian exam of Seoul National University Medical School.  He seems to be a simple person, but inside is a resilient and stubborn spirit. Myung-hee has been a nurse for three years.  She is a lovely person, she is always ready to stand up against what is not fair.

Carrying the agonizing pain of youthful impulses, Hwang Hee Tae returns to his hometown and is scheduled to debut with the lady Lee Soo Ryun (Geum Sae Rok). However, ironically, Soo Ryun had no ambition to get married, so she asked her friend Kim Myung Hee to come to the premiere instead in exchange for the ticket to study in Germany that Myung Hee always wanted.  According to her best friend's plan, Myung Hee tried her best to leave a bad impression on Hee Tae to break the engagement, but he never expected that he knew her true identity in advance and fell in love with this poor nurse, even though  knowing that his tycoon father would never agree.  The meeting of Myung Hee and Hee Tae is the arrangement of the wheel of fate, the sweet May before the storm hits.

One thing in common between the characters of this work is that they all carry scars in their souls or burning desires to escape the "cocoon" of reality and fate.  Student Hwang Hee Tae, although he is the son of a tycoon, but always has to live under the scornful eyes of people when born as the son of a prostitute, Hee Tae is always haunted by the mistakes of the past.  but still have not graduated from medical school. As for Myung Hee, she was born in a difficult family but always dreamed of her dream to study in Germany, so she always tries to endure injustices from work and life, even accepting to go see her eyes instead of her friend.  only exchange for a study ticket.  Born in the era of male preference, female nurses like Myung Hee are often harassed but she is the few who dare to stand up against the wrong. Following the gentle flow of the film's story, the remaining characters also gradually appeared, Lee Soo Ryeon, the beautiful daughter of a chaebol family, but unlike her rich family, Soo Ryeon is the leader of the protest movement in Gwangju against the government. Next to the radio sister is Soo Ryeon's eldest brother - Soo Chan (Lee Sang Yi).  He is an international student returning from abroad, bringing modern Western ideas to his hometown Gwangju. Soo Chan's image represents elders who always have to struggle to shoulder the responsibilities of both family and social concerns but forget the concept of self. Besides the dreams and ambitions of young people are the prejudices of the old society that weigh on their shoulders and the responsibilities to family and society.  As a father because of his ambition, he arranged for his son a marriage on behalf of the family, or the injustices of the government accidentally pushed the students into a painful protest.

The film ended with a very sad ending, the audience cried a lot for this painful but reasonable ending of this movie.  The heroine leaves, the male lead is desperate because his only family can't even find the body.  41 years later, also in May, the female lead's body was found.  The little ashes left behind and the unread engagement letter to Hee Tae he finally received after 41 years.

 41 years of regret, resentment and many "what ifs":

 What if we didn't see each other that year?

 What if at that time I didn't spend my heart madly in love?

What if I let you go?

 If not lost each other?

 Am I still alive?  Are you happy?

 In fact, love doesn't need much if it comes to that.

 41 years since Hee Tae died Myung Hee, he lives a quiet life in a simple apartment: 1 bed, 1 desk.  That's all he has besides the job to help him continue living, waiting for the day to meet her again, waiting for the day when he can lay a decent grave for the person he loves all his life. If they go back, perhaps that year they still choose to meet each other, they will still choose to be brave young people with hearts that are not afraid of heaven, not afraid of the earth, but love each other fiercely and even if the separation is severe, is pain for the rest of my life, it is the short 3 weeks of love that is the only tranquilizer for the long 41 long years to come.

Respecting history, in the film, the fashion style is always simple, the clothes are simple, the colors are calm, somewhat old, the background is simple arranged in a poor village are the characteristics of the film movie.  Our heroine Myung Hee (Go Min Si) doesn't even wear lipstick and most of them have to film bare-faced.  It seemed to make the film less attractive, but it was a feature that brought reality to the context at that time as well as the character's background.  Although there are not many special effects, but that simple way of shooting leaves a lot of impressions in the hearts of the audience, which is like a unique feature of the film.

Film critics mostly said that they cried while watching this movie, 97% of young people like to watch the movie.  For me, this is a very watchable movie, it gives viewers a new way of acting in Korean movies. I've watched it for the 4th time but still find it really good.  Everyone should watch this movie once because it's a romantic drama, but the way the cast shows it is not sad but also makes the audience laugh with awkward situations.  "Youth of May" is like a slow-motion movie for us to immerse and feel about a glorious but tumultuous youth time.
