Nazi's breaking into his home

Josef is awoken to the sound of someone breaking into his apartment. Adolf Hitler's "storm troopers" take his dad to a concentration camp because he was practicing law even though jewish people were forbidden to.

Train ride to Hamburg

6 months later, his dad was released under the condition that they would leave within 14 days. They went on a train to Hamburg so they could take a boat from there, to flee to Cuba. The train was seperated into 2 different sections for the jewish and none jewish. Josef was curious to know if people could recognize him without his yellow star of david armband. He was caught, but luckily the Hitler Youth boy who found him just told him off and didn't get him into any trouble.

Josef sees his dad again

Before they were about to board the boat, a shabby looking man popped out who turned out to be their dad. He looked unrecognisable and kept on being super paranoid and saying this like for example that they would come for them soon.

The trip to Cuba

While being on the MS St.Louis, Josef felt completely normal and he was enjoying his relaxing and fun time on the boat. He also had his Bah Mitzvah, but his father didn't come. After his Bah Mitzvah, he overhears that the ship was rushing to Cuba because they might turn them away.

Arriving Cuba

after being at the shore of Cuba for 3 days, the Nazi party leader, Schiendick went into Josef's room and messed the whole room up. His mom wanted to go get a sleeping draught for his father to calm him down, but she was forced to drink it infront of the doctor. Josef went to find his sister but when he came back to his room, his father was gone and he found out that he jumped overboard. They took his dad to a hospital.

The trip to the United States

Josef and his family was forced to leave his father behind. The ship was bringing them United States. Pozner asked Josef if he wanted to be part of their team to force the captain to go around the American coast so that they wouldn't have to return back to Germany.

Fleeing to France

The passengers found out that Belgium, Holland, France and England would take them in. Josef was in the third group which meant that they were going to go to France. Everything started was working out, but then Germany invaded France and Josef and his sister had to flee again.

Josef's decision

While staying in the countryside of France, storm troopers found them. Josef's mother offered everything to not go to the concentration camp. The solider asked her to choose which one of her kids would go to the concetration camp with her, and which one would be free. Josef chose for his mom.

His death
