COMPARE/CONTRAST- 
James Cook did not obtain any riches, but instead information about the oceans and the sun and etc.
GLORY- Hernando Cortes wanted glory, and he got his glory by persuading Diego Velazquez to make him commander

COMPARE/CONTRAST- James Cook earned his glory by commanding the first organized science expedition. He was also promoted to commander and was presented to King George III, and lead more expeditions.

  • Hernando Cortes after landing and discovering Tabasco he gained intelligence from the Indians. Afterwards he sailed to a coast along the SouthEast coast of Mexico and found veracruz. He exercised his army and disciplined them making them into a cohesive force. After sinking his ships he committed himself and his whole army to survive by conquest. Going for the interior of Mexico he had to rely on force sometimes, sometimes made friends with the local Indians. After subduing the neighbouring territories he laid siege to the city itself, conquering it street by street until its capture was completed on August 13, 1521. This victory marked the fall of the Aztec empire. Cortés had become the absolute ruler of a huge territory extending from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
  • James Cook on the other hand found and charted all of New Zealand, and discovered the southeast coast of Australia. 30 men on his ship died of fever but none died of Scurvy. He discovered New Caledonia in the Pacific and the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia island in the Atlantic. And in July 1776 he went off again on the Resolution, with another Whitby ship, the Discovery. This search was unsuccessful, for neither a northwest nor a northeast passage usable by sailing ships existed, and the voyage led to Cook’s death. Cook had set new standards of thoroughness in discovery and seamanship, in navigation, cartography, and the care of men at sea, in relations with indigenous peoples both friendly and hostile, and in the application of science at sea. And he had peacefully changed the map of the world more than any other single man in history. Cook never went to war, and in all honesty was a good man who did the wrong thing which was stealing a cutter which got him killed.

    Hernando Cortes never made a map but instead just his route throughout Mexico and what he found along the way. 

    On the other hand, James Cook made his own map of New Zealand, he was a cartographer. But it is comparable because both persons made a map of where they traveled. 

    Hernando Cortes had many, many quotes but here is one of them “I love to travel, but hate to arrive.”

This meant that the natives lost much of their native culture. It meant that they came to be a subordinate people in what used to be their home. It meant that they were exploited for their labor and generally treated pretty poorly. Cortes Destroyed the native life of Mexico. In 1528 Cortés sailed for Spain to plead his cause in person with the king. He brought with him a great wealth of treasure and a magnificent entourage. After showing king of Spain the impacts he has caused, afterwards he was made to be captain general. He brought civilization to Mexico, he allowed Mexico to become a Modern Nation.

Natives lost their native culture, they became subordinate to their own home, they were exploited for labor and treated horribly.

    Took over the Aztec Empire. The Spanish had a positive effect on Aztec civilization because they helped modernize the society. They introduced the Aztecs to domestic animals, sugar, grains, and European farming practices. Most significantly, the Spanish ended the Aztec's practice of human sacrifice. 

    Another negative effect he has is that he introduced smallpox to Mexico and that had devastating effects. When Cortes arrived 30 million Aztecs lived there after fifty years only 3 million were left. He also introduced the African slave trade to Mexico.
