She recounts growing up in a society where boys are valued over girls, not only their lives, but their rights too. She describes how fortunate she is to have been raised by her father who "never clipped her wings". Malala talks about the threats she faces in her fight for the education of girls and children around the world. This book highlights education as a privilege that is sadly not available to everyone, in this sense it highlights historical empathy. In addition, Malala's struggles to attain an education because of her sex is also an example of historical empathy. The fact that girls and women still have to fight for equal rights and gender/sex equality brings into question  Why can't women receive the same fundamental rights? Why must gender/sex ideals distort the rights of women as human beings?  Lastly, this book highlights historical empathy through Malala's faith. Malala is a Muslim who uses her faith to strive for her goal of receiving and education as well as to help her family and country overcome the Taliban.
