Through out the first chapters you see how the child (main character) in foster care is very stand off ish to there new family.

In the first chapter he doesn’t speak to his foster brother and only focuses on the farm life that he’s now living. He kinda berries himself into that.

By him being stand off ish and only wanting to be involved with the farm animals. The family kinda get to see his true self and nature through that. In a bigger aspect he seems like a good human in a bad situation.

The environment and care he’s receiving he learns to be more loving towards the family and trusting of their kindness.

Because of his past he lacks trust and sometimes empathy. With the help of the community (foster family) he is able to understand the depth of his actions and emotions and he grows as a character.

(I haven’t finished the book yet but what I’ve read his character development is wonderfully written)

Where most cases for foster care is not as difficult as this one there are definitely a lot that are a struggle. Adoption is not rainbows and sun shine as much as people want to think that. The system damages you so much so and this book sheds the depth and complexity of that process to us the readers. We see the true strength and struggles of the boy in the system and how the family really affects him in a positive way.

We see how many people are prejudice against the child. And treat him differently than the kids that don’t go thru what he went thru. His traumatic experience makes his actions different compared to others and that’s seen through out the book. But this book sheafs light on that and helps us the readers realize everyone is human and everyone has a story and judging anyone from that will eventually come back to bite you in the tail.

The kindness shown to him is eventually reciprocated but the meanness is also reciprocated aswell.

The main character is a young boy. And you can tell that boys in his situation are looked at differently compared to girls in his situation.

The main character is also approaching high school and I feel like it’s common knowledge that if you basically “grow out” of the system (like getting to your teens and no longer being a cute baby) it’s a thousand times less likely that you will be adopted.

The way his learning (schooling) is affected shows the type of I guess a better way to word it is that we are able to see how the teachers are scared or intimidated and feel unsafe around him. He’s treated almost in human.

I think it’s partly of his actions but they fail to realize he was a victim aswell.

This treatment is very sad to read about it feels as if he wishes he could take everything back and just be non existent.

Teen pregnancy is also a discussed subject in this book. They bring up how he felt lost and as a result he’s now become a parent of a little girl at a young age. He’s very young and now he’s also a parent. So on top of his own issues him having a child is added to it again.
