Maybe the wife always knew the husband had not been cleaning the windows and this was her way to get him to clean the windows. She is the master developer! That's the role of supts?!

He could have pointed out the wife's mistake right from the start. 
We assume that he wanted to give his wife space to discover. 
Or he did not dare to admit that he's not cleaned the window. 
Or maybe he could not be bothered
