The team captain checks in with their members to assure that they understand how to solve the problem correctly. I model this process at the beginning of the year with the whole class in using strategies such as, revoicing, repeating, etc.

In math, I allow students to work together in their teams and explore a variety of strategies to solve 2-3 step word problems or other type of complex problems. Afterwards, I create 4 columns on the board under the displayed problem. I invite students to come up to the board to show their thinking and explain how they solved the problem. I usually get 2 to 3 different variations of how to solve the problem correctly. Students in the audience usually ask questions for clarification or comment that they used the same process.

For writing about math, have each student write their first step to solving a problem on a piece of paper. Then have them give their paper to the person to the left. They should then write the second step to solving the problem on the paper they just received. Have them continue to pass papers to the left and add steps to the papers they receive until they explained how to solve the problem. This is an interactive way to get them to explain their thinking. They also get to see other students' explanations and can revise or add on their others' thoughts.

There is so much talk going on in my classroom all day. I use think, pair, and share, turn and talk, and small groups. They sit together at a table of 4. I encourage a chatty class as long as they are getting their work done. I encourage helping each other and working together. They enjoy a lot of reading together and our snack time social time help build positive interaction that carries over into our classroom work.

I use visuals or research an appropriate short video clip to help illustrate new vocabulary or a new concept. I slow down when speaking and use gestures to act out what I am teaching so that the students that need extra support can stay engaged even if they don't understand all the words I am saying yet.
