Hacienta Ojo de Agua and Fruitex used Bromicil, a chemical herbicide, which has poisoned the groundwaters in Siquirres, Luisiana, Milano, Francia and Cairo. “Regulations against pesticides and other agrochemicals exist, however they are out of date and difficult to enforce,” said Moisés Salgado, a UCR representative and one of the conference’s organizers. He said the rapid expanse and widespread nature of the industry makes it difficult to regulate and one of the reasons why little action has been taken to reign in the use of agrochemicals.

As drug cartels have moved into the forests to create helipads and destroy trees, the local government denies Bribri the right to protect the forests from invaders. Drug problems are a problem with local youth as a result. There are high suicide rates with the youth. In 2013 the Bribri reported three helicopters flying over their land.
